Taxonomy & naming
Schistura sexnubes was described by Endruweit in 2014 in Zoological Research, the journal of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as part of a revision of nemacheilid loaches from the upper Mekong drainage of Yunnan Province. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — the largest and most species-rich family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and one whose genus-level classification has been repeatedly reshuffled as older catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart. Schistura, as currently understood, is one of the products of that split and remains the valid genus for this species under the Catalog of Fishes.
The species epithet sexnubes is built from Latin sex ("six") and nubes ("clouds"), referring to the six dark saddle blotches crossing the dorsal profile of the body — a diagnostic feature the original description uses to separate it from superficially similar congeners in the same river system. As with many recently described Schistura, there is no meaningful pre-2014 taxonomic history to speak of: the species was unknown to science, and to the aquarium trade, until its formal description.
Morphology
This is a small fish even by stone-loach standards: the type series tops out at 2 in standard length, and most specimens collected were smaller. The body is elongate and only lightly built, with a shallow caudal peduncle (roughly 7.6–9.6% of standard length) typical of a fish adapted to hold position against current rather than to make long open-water dashes. The lateral line is incomplete, a common nemacheilid trait, and the caudal fin carries 8+8 branched rays.
Colour pattern is the species' most distinctive feature and the source of its name: six saddle-like blotches cross the back, paired with a sharply defined black V-shaped mark running between the nostrils and a white, oval blotch on the upper edge of the gill cover. Like other true loaches in Cobitoidea it carries a small erectile spine beneath the eye and has tiny, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin functionally naked — a point that matters for anyone ever attempting to keep or treat this genus, though no aquarium-specific observations exist for this species. No sexual dimorphism has been reported in the original description.
Habitat
Schistura sexnubes is known only from the Mengmenghe River, a tributary of the Xiaoheijiang subbasin within the upper Mekong (Lancang) drainage, in Shuangjiang County, Lincang Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China, at an elevation of roughly 1,154 ft. The type locality is a swift, rocky mountain stream 4–15.5 in deep with a rocky substrate — classic rheophilic (current-loving) stone-loach habitat. At a sympatric locality in the same drainage, recorded water conditions were 70 °F and pH 5.4, indicating a cool, soft, acidic upland stream rather than warm lowland water.
Only five specimens were recovered from a sample of roughly 250 nemacheilids at the type locality, suggesting the species is genuinely rare or restricted even within its own habitat. Nothing has been published on its range beyond this single upper-Mekong tributary system, and the species should be treated as a narrow-range Yunnan stream endemic until further survey work says otherwise.
Feeding
No feeding data has been published for Schistura sexnubes specifically. Based on the well-documented ecology of Schistura and other Nemacheilidae generally, it is almost certainly a benthic micro-predator, picking small aquatic insect larvae, other invertebrates and organic material from among the rocks and gravel of its fast-flowing home stream — the standard diet of small rheophilic stone loaches. This should be treated as an inference from the genus rather than a confirmed fact for this species.
Mating
No mating or reproductive behaviour has been documented for this species; the original description is a taxonomic paper based on preserved museum material, not a field or aquarium study of its life history. Nemacheilid stone loaches as a group are egg-scatterers rather than pair-forming or cave-guarding fish, and there is no reason to expect Schistura sexnubes to differ, but this cannot be stated as an observed fact for the species itself.
Breeding
Nothing is known about the breeding of Schistura sexnubes, and the species has no history in the aquarium trade to draw on. The genus and family pattern — and the honest default for the great majority of stone and brook loaches — is an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel and among rocks in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward. Home aquarium spawning of small Schistura species is rare and poorly documented across the genus as a whole, and there is no record of this species ever having been kept, let alone bred, in captivity. Data here is sparse to the point of nonexistence beyond the reasonable genus-level inference.
In the aquarium
Schistura sexnubes has no known aquarium history — it does not appear in the ornamental trade, and no hobbyist husbandry information exists for it. Anyone extrapolating from its Nemacheilidae relatives and its specific habitat data would expect a small, cool-to-cool-temperate, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated stream setup with a rocky substrate and clear, soft, acidic water, mirroring the 70 °F, pH 5.4 conditions recorded at a nearby locality in its home drainage — not a warm, still community tank. As with other near-scaleless loaches, any hypothetical captive care would need to account for sensitivity to copper and full-strength medications. This section is necessarily speculative; treat it as informed extrapolation from the genus and habitat data, not as verified care advice.
Conservation
Schistura sexnubes has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status. Given that it is known from a single small stream system in Yunnan, China, with only a handful of specimens recovered even at the type locality, and that no subsequent surveys or trade records have added to that picture, it should be regarded as a poorly known, potentially narrow-range endemic rather than assumed to be secure. There is no evidence of any aquarium trade pressure on this species, and the main plausible long-term risks — as with many small upper-Mekong tributary endemics in Yunnan — would be habitat-scale pressures such as stream alteration, damming or water-quality change rather than collection.
