Taxonomy & naming
Schistura shadiwalensis was described in 1981 by Mirza and Nalbant, placing it from the outset in the genus Schistura, one of the largest and most species-rich genera of stone loaches across South and Southeast Asia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer), the authority for valid fish names, recognises it as a valid species in family Nemacheilidae, and later taxonomic and faunal-survey literature — including work on co-occurring Schistura in the Swat river system — continues to treat it as distinct.
The species epithet, shadiwalensis, is a Latinised place-name referring to Shadiwal, a locality on the upper Chenab river in Pakistan's Punjab province where the type specimens were collected. Nemacheilidae itself has been heavily reshuffled by taxonomists over the past few decades, with many species once lumped in broad genera like Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus redistributed into narrower genera such as Schistura, Triplophysa and Barbatula; this species has kept its original Schistura placement since description.
Morphology
As a member of Schistura, this is a small, elongate, cylindrical loach built for holding position on the bed of fast-flowing streams rather than for open swimming. Typical Schistura carry a slender body, a subterminal mouth suited to picking food items off gravel and stones, small barbels around the mouth, and — like other true loaches — a suborbital spine, a small erectile spine hidden in a fold of skin beneath the eye that can be flicked out defensively. The skin is essentially naked, with tiny, deeply embedded scales rather than the overlapping scales of most other fish groups.

These are high-gradient waters running over gravel and stone substrate, cooled by elevation and snowmelt input even though the region sits at subtropical latitude. As a species absent from the aquarium trade, it faces no documented ornamental-collection pressure. Broader risks to Himalayan foothill stream fishes generally include water abstraction, siltation and habitat alteration in the watersheds they depend on, but no species-specific threat assessment beyond the LC rating was found in the sources reviewed here.
