Taxonomy & naming
Schistura spekuli was formally described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2004 as a new species of cave fish from northern Vietnam. The original description placed it, per the taxonomy of the time, in the family Balitoridae; Nemacheilidae — the stone and brook loaches — was later split out as its own family, and Schistura sits within it as one of its largest and most species-rich genera, a genus that has absorbed many species once described under the older names Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus. The Catalog of Fishes, the authority followed here, retains the combination Schistura spekuli.
The specific epithet spekuli is a genitive noun honouring SPEKUL, the speleological (caving) club of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium, whose members discovered and collected the type specimens during a caving expedition into the karst of Lai Chau Province. Naming a cave fish after the cavers who found it is a small but telling detail of how many troglobitic species come to science — through cavers first, ichthyologists second.
Morphology
Schistura spekuli is a small nemacheilid, reaching about 2 in standard length. Like other members of the genus it is an elongate, cylindrical loach with a ventrally flattened head and belly built for holding position against current, and — where present in surface relatives — an erectile suborbital spine typical of the family, tucked in a groove below the eye and used defensively.
What sets it apart is its cave adaptation: the body is essentially unpigmented, described as white, and the eyes are reduced or absent — classic troglomorphic features shared by many obligate cave fishes worldwide, in which pigment and vision are lost over generations spent in permanent darkness where neither serves any purpose. Meristic detail from the type description records 11–12 dorsal soft rays and 8 anal soft rays. Like all Nemacheilidae, its skin carries no heavy scale armor, leaving it — as with its stone-loach relatives — sensitive to handling and to strong medication.
Habitat
The species is known only from a cave near Tam Duong, in Lai Chau Province in the mountainous far north of Vietnam, close to the Chinese border — a single hypogean (subterranean) stream system rather than an open river. This is genuinely a one-site species as far as the literature records: no other populations have been documented.
Specifics of the cave water itself — temperature, pH, flow rate — were not captured in available sources and should be treated as unknown rather than assumed; troglobitic streams of this kind are typically cool-to-mild, stable, clear and well-oxygenated, but that is an inference from cave biology in general, not a confirmed reading for this site. What is clear is that this is entirely freshwater and entirely subterranean, with no surface-stream population to fall back on for a fuller ecological picture.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study is available for Schistura spekuli. Based on the ecology of Schistura generally — bottom-dwelling micro-predators that pick small invertebrates, insect larvae and crustaceans from the substrate — the cave population most likely still forages this way, sifting whatever organic material and small invertebrate life washes into or persists within the cave stream, since cave ecosystems depend on imported nutrients rather than photosynthesis. This should be read as an informed inference from its genus and family, not a confirmed observation; the species' actual diet in the wild has not been documented in the sources available.
Mating
Nothing specific has been documented about courtship or spawning behaviour in Schistura spekuli — unsurprising for a fish known from a single, difficult-to-access cave system and never reported in the aquarium trade. Stone and brook loaches in the genus Schistura are, so far as studied, egg-scatterers with no pair-bonding or parental investment beyond releasing eggs into the water column; there is no confirmed evidence this cave species differs from that pattern, but equally no direct observation confirming it does.
Breeding
As with feeding and courtship, no breeding has ever been recorded for this species, in the wild or otherwise — it is not known to be present in the aquarium trade at all. The safest statement, consistent with its genus, is that it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer over the cave streambed with no parental care, in keeping with the near-universal pattern for Nemacheilidae. Reproduction is rarely or never observed even for common, well-studied Schistura species in captivity; for a single-cave endemic like this one, the honest position is that breeding biology is essentially undocumented and should be marked data sparse rather than described in detail.
In the aquarium
Schistura spekuli is not a fish anyone should expect to keep. It is not reported in the aquarium trade, has an extremely restricted single-site range, and as a strict troglobite it would in any case be a poor aquarium candidate — it has lost the eyes and pigmentation that let ordinary loaches navigate and display in lit water, and its biology is built entirely around stable, dark, low-nutrient cave conditions that a home tank cannot approximate.
The entry here exists to document the species honestly rather than to encourage its keeping. General Nemacheilidae caution still applies in principle to any cave-loach relative that might ever be collected: like other stone loaches it is likely scaleless-skin sensitive to copper and full-strength medications. But the operative point for this species is conservation, not care — it should stay in its cave.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Schistura spekuli as Vulnerable under criterion D2 (as reported via FishBase, citing the 2011 IUCN assessment), reflecting its restriction to a single known cave locality — the textbook profile for a D2 listing, where a very small number of locations makes a species vulnerable to a single damaging event even without an observed ongoing decline. Cave-endemic fishes of this kind face an outsized set of narrow risks: any disturbance to the cave's hydrology, water quality or entrance access — from local land-use change, groundwater extraction, pollution, or even increased caving/tourism traffic — could affect the entire known population at once, since there is no second population to fall back on.
There is no evidence of aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species; its threats, so far as documented, are tied entirely to its single cave site rather than to exploitation. Its conservation value lies in what it represents scientifically — an extreme, highly localized case of cave adaptation within Nemacheilidae — as much as in the fish itself.
