Taxonomy & naming
Schistura spiesi was described by Chavalit Vidthayanon and Maurice Kottelat in 2003, placed directly in the genus Schistura from the outset — it has never carried an older Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus combination in the literature. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches, by far the largest loach family and one that has absorbed many species once scattered across other "loach-like" genera as the group's taxonomy was progressively untangled through the 1990s and 2000s.
The species epithet honours John Spies, an Australian speleologist whose caving work helped document the Thai cave systems where the species was found. The genus Schistura is enormous and still growing, with new species regularly split out of it as karst cave systems and remote headwater streams across South and Southeast Asia are surveyed; S. spiesi is one of a small handful of genuinely cave-adapted members within it.
Morphology
Like other Schistura, this is a slender, elongate, cylindrical-bodied loach with a ventrally flattened belly built for hugging a hard substrate, a pointed snout, and barbels around the mouth used to feel out food by touch. Males develop a suborbital flap and a hump behind the nape, a feature shared with several of their stream-dwelling relatives and presumably tied to breeding condition or male-male interaction. Reported dorsal and anal fin-ray counts (12 dorsal soft rays, 8 anal soft rays) sit within the normal range for the genus.
What sets Schistura spiesi apart is its adaptation to permanent darkness: it is described as blind, with eyes that become progressively less visible as the fish grows, a pattern typical of cave-dwelling (troglobitic) fishes that lose functional vision over their lifetime in favour of touch- and vibration-based senses. Like its relatives it carries the erectile suborbital spine typical of the loach superfamily and has the thin, largely embedded scales and near-scaleless skin that make Nemacheilidae sensitive to rough handling and to medication. Maximum recorded size is about 4.5 in standard length, a solidly mid-sized Schistura.
Habitat
The species is known from Tham Phra Wang Daeng, a limestone cave in Thailand, and its native range is understood to be confined to this single known cave system — the classic profile of a short-range troglobitic endemic. Life inside a cave stream means permanent darkness, generally stable temperatures, and water that is typically clear, cool-to-moderate and flowing over rock and cave sediment rather than through vegetated forest streams.
Aquarium water reported for the species runs 70–79 °F with a pH of 6.0–7.5 — cooler and more neutral than a typical tropical community tank, consistent with a stable cave-stream environment rather than a warm, still, blackwater habitat. As a single-cave endemic, its entire wild population occupies an extremely small and fragile footprint, which is the central fact governing how the species should be understood and, if ever kept, cared for.
Feeding
As a blind cave dweller, Schistura spiesi almost certainly forages by touch and smell rather than sight, working over rock and sediment for the small invertebrates and organic material that wash into or persist within cave-stream systems — the general micro-predator pattern typical of Nemacheilidae, adapted to a food-poor, lightless setting.
In captivity it has been kept on sinking pellets and frozen invertebrate foods such as mosquito larvae, brine shrimp and daphnia, which it presumably locates using its barbels rather than eyesight. Feeding needs to reach the bottom reliably, since a blind, benthic fish cannot be expected to compete for food in open water or against sighted tankmates.
Mating
Nothing specific has been documented about courtship or spawning behaviour in Schistura spiesi. Its close relatives among the stone and brook loaches are generally understood to be egg-scatterers with no parental care, pairing or grouping loosely at spawning time rather than forming lasting pair bonds, but no direct observations of this species' reproductive behaviour — in the wild or in captivity — appear to have been recorded.
Given that it is a single-cave endemic that is rarely, if ever, kept or bred outside specialist or research settings, this is an area where honest data-sparseness is the correct position rather than extrapolation from more commonly kept Schistura.
Breeding
No aquarium spawning of Schistura spiesi has been reported. Consistent with the wider pattern in Nemacheilidae, if it breeds as its relatives do it would be expected to scatter eggs over gravel or cave sediment in flowing water with no parental care, but this has not been documented for the species itself.
In practice, the cave loach should be considered essentially unbred in the hobby. It is not a species anyone should expect to propagate at home, both because so little is known of its reproductive needs and because — as a range-restricted cave endemic already under collection pressure — any keeping of the species should prioritise conservation-minded caution over breeding ambition.
In the aquarium
Schistura spiesi is a specialist fish for a specialist keeper, not a general community loach. Its blindness means tankmates and aquascaping need to accommodate a fish that navigates by touch: a dim or unlit tank, a soft, snag-free substrate, and secure retreats it can find without sight all matter more here than in a sighted Schistura. Water should stay cool-to-moderate and clean, in the 70–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.5 range reported for the species, reflecting the stable conditions of its native cave stream rather than a warm, static community setup.
As with all Nemacheilidae it is essentially scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, so any dosing should be conservative and closely monitored. Given its Vulnerable status and single-cave range, this is a fish whose availability in the trade should raise real ethical questions for a prospective keeper — it is not a species to buy on impulse, and its long-term welfare depends on replicating a very specific, food-poor, lightless habitat that most aquaria are not designed to offer.
Conservation
Schistura spiesi is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable. Its entire known range is a single cave system, Tham Phra Wang Daeng in Thailand, which makes it inherently fragile: any disturbance to that one site — habitat degradation, water-quality changes, or over-collection — bears on the whole species rather than one population among many.
The species is noted as being at risk from collection for the aquarium trade as well as from broader threats to its cave habitat. For a single-site cave endemic, collection pressure that would be a minor concern for a widespread river species can represent a meaningful share of the total wild population, underscoring why this is a fish best appreciated through documentation rather than acquisition for most keepers.
