Taxonomy & naming
Schistura stala was formally described by Endruweit in 2017, based on material from a tributary of the Yangbi River, itself part of the Lancangjiang (the Chinese stretch of the Mekong) in Dali Prefecture, Yunnan Province, southwestern China. It sits in the genus Schistura, one of several genera — alongside Triplophysa, Barbatula, Oxynoemacheilus and Paracobitis — carved out of the old, overly broad "Nemacheilus"/"Noemacheilus" catch-all as the family was revised through DNA and detailed morphological work. The Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the valid combination, and Schistura stala is the name in current use; no synonymy or rename is indicated in the sources consulted here.
The species was distinguished from its congeners on a combination of characters: a reduced caudal-fin bar, a comparatively deep body, a short caudal fin, proportions of the head and pelvic fin, and a modal count of 38 vertebrae, together with 9–12 faint, irregular flank bars that sometimes merge into one another. As with many recently split Schistura, the differences from close relatives are subtle and largely the province of a formal redescription rather than something a hobbyist could confirm by eye.
Morphology
Schistura stala shows the classic nemacheilid stone-loach build: an elongate, gently compressed body, a small ventral-to-subterminal mouth suited to picking food off stones and gravel, and paired barbels around the mouth for feeling out food on the streambed. Like other members of its family it carries an erectile suborbital spine — a small defensive spine hidden in a groove below the eye that can be flicked out, a family-wide feature shared with the unrelated but similarly armed botiids. Its skin is effectively naked, covered only in very small, deeply embedded scales, which matters for husbandry and disease sensitivity.

Habitat

Streams of this kind are typically well-oxygenated and low in dissolved organics, with the fish holding position against current on riffle beds rather than drifting in open water. Like other nemacheilids it is essentially scaleless and should be presumed sensitive to copper-based and full-strength medications, warranting the same cautious, reduced-dose approach used with other loaches. In practice, though, a keeper is unlikely to encounter this species in the trade at all; it belongs more to the realm of ichthyological record than to the aquarium shop.
