Taxonomy & naming
Schistura susannae was described in 2001 by Jörg Freyhof and Dmitry Serov, part of a wave of Schistura descriptions from Vietnam and mainland Southeast Asia in the late 1990s and 2000s as ichthyologists worked through the region's stream faunas. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, which was split out from the broader Balitoridae/Cobitidae complex and today forms the largest of the loach families by species count. Many of its relatives were historically lumped under the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus; the Catalog of Fishes, the governing authority for valid names, now places this species firmly in Schistura.
As with much of this genus, the species is defined by a combination of colour pattern, fin-ray counts and lateral-line details rather than any single obvious feature, and it has not been the subject of significant taxonomic revision since its description. No synonyms are in wide use.
Morphology
This is a small, elongate loach, reaching only about 2 in in standard length. The body carries a series of 6 to 11 dark, regularly shaped bars crossing a paler ground colour, the typical banded pattern shared by many Schistura and useful for distinguishing it from co-occurring relatives. The dorsal fin carries 12 soft rays and the anal fin 8, and the lateral line is incomplete, running only partway along the flank — a common condition in this genus.
Like other nemacheilids, Schistura susannae carries a small erectile spine beneath the eye and has tiny, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin functionally naked. Both points matter for anyone keeping or handling the fish: the spine can snag a net, and the near-scaleless skin makes the species sensitive to harsh medications and to poor water quality generally.
Habitat
The species is known only from the Mong Mo stream, its type locality, a small coastal drainage in central Vietnam. This is exactly the kind of narrow, single-catchment range that recurs again and again across the genus Schistura — many species are described from one stream system and never subsequently recorded elsewhere, whether because they are genuinely that restricted or because survey effort in the region's smaller drainages remains thin.
The stream itself is a small mountain watercourse with waterfalls and riffles over gravel and sandy substrate — fast, clear, well-oxygenated water typical of the upland habitats this genus favours. Beyond the type locality description, detailed habitat data for this species is sparse; no dedicated ecological study appears to have followed the original description.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study has been published for Schistura susannae, but its biology follows the pattern typical of the genus: a bottom-dwelling micro-predator that forages among gravel and stones in fast water for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other benthic prey.
In an aquarium setting this would translate to a readiness to take small live or frozen foods (bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp) and quality sinking pellets or wafers, foraging actively over the substrate rather than taking food from the surface or water column.
Mating
Nothing specific has been documented about courtship or spawning behaviour in Schistura susannae. No external sexual dimorphism has been reported for the species, and data on this point, as for most of its biology beyond the original description, is sparse.
Breeding
As with the great majority of stone and brook loaches, there is no record of Schistura susannae being bred in the aquarium. The genus as a whole is presumed to be an egg-scatterer, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care, and that is the reasonable inference here in the absence of direct data. Breeding of Schistura species in captivity is rare and undocumented for the overwhelming majority, and this species should be assumed to fall into that category rather than treated as an exception.
In the aquarium
Schistura susannae is not established in the aquarium trade and specific keeping data is essentially absent; what follows is inferred from the genus and the species' known habitat rather than direct experience reports. A cool-to-moderate, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated setup with a gravel or sand substrate, strong filtration for turnover, and stable, clean water would match the stream conditions it is known from far better than a warm, still community tank.
Because it is near-scaleless like other nemacheilids, any specimen in captivity would need careful, reduced-strength medication and would likely be an early indicator of deteriorating water quality or disease in a tank. Given how little is documented, anyone encountering this species in the trade should treat it as a specialist fish requiring stream-like conditions rather than a generic bottom-dweller.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Schistura susannae as Vulnerable, an assessment from September 2010 based on its restriction to a single small coastal drainage (the Mong Mo stream) in central Vietnam — criterion D2, reflecting a population with a very restricted area of occupancy that could be rapidly threatened by any single damaging event. FishBase notes the species is considered to have relatively high population resilience, with a minimum population doubling time of under 15 months, which is a mitigating factor but does not offset the risk inherent in single-locality endemism.
No dedicated conservation programme or updated assessment appears to exist for this species. As with many narrow-range stream endemics in Vietnam, the chief long-term risks are habitat-driven — deforestation, water extraction, and development pressure on small coastal drainages — rather than any documented trade-driven decline, since the species has essentially no presence in the aquarium trade.
