Taxonomy & naming
Schistura syngkai was described in 2019 by Choudhury, Mukhim, Dey, Warbah and Sarma in the journal Zootaxa, based on specimens collected from the Twahdidoh stream, a tributary of the Wahblei River in the Surma-Meghna drainage of Meghalaya, northeast India. The holotype measured 1.5 in standard length. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by species count the largest family of loaches, and one that has absorbed most of the old, broad genus "Noemacheilus" as taxonomists have split it apart over the past few decades.
The genus name Schistura comes from the Greek schistos, "split," referring to features of the fin or lateral line used to separate this genus from its relatives; the species epithet syngkai references local Khasi-Meghalayan usage tied to the type locality. The Catalog of Fishes recognizes Schistura syngkai as a valid, currently accepted name with no synonyms — it has not been reassigned or renamed since its description.
Morphology
Schistura syngkai is a small, elongate loach with the slender, faintly arched body typical of the genus. The original description records a golden-brown to amber ground colour overlain with a dark-brown to blackish stripe along the midline of the body, itself broken by 12 to 18 vertically elongated black blotches — a pattern that reads as a chain of bars rather than a solid stripe when the fish is at rest. The lateral line is incomplete, a detail used alongside fin and blotch counts to separate this species from closely related Schistura in the same drainage. The caudal fin is slightly emarginate (shallowly notched) rather than deeply forked.
Like other Schistura it almost certainly carries the erectile suborbital spine characteristic of the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, tucked in a groove below the eye and flicked out when the fish is handled or threatened — though the original description does not dwell on this. The skin is thin and the scales, where present, are small and deeply embedded, a combination shared across stone loaches that leaves them sensitive to medication and rough handling, a point worth keeping in mind for any DD or NE species that might eventually reach hobbyist hands. The description reports no obvious sexual dimorphism between the type specimens.
Habitat
The known range of Schistura syngkai is a single clear hill stream: the Twahdidoh, which flows past rice paddies near Seinduli village in the Meghalaya hills of northeast India, part of the Surma-Meghna river system that drains toward Bangladesh. This is the kind of habitat typical for small Schistura across the eastern Himalayan foothills — cool to mild, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water running over a rocky or gravel substrate, shaded by streamside vegetation and subject to strong seasonal variation as the monsoon rains rise and fall.
No dedicated water-chemistry survey accompanies the original description, so precise temperature and pH figures for the Twahdidoh are not published; what can be said with confidence, based on the type locality and the biology of the genus, is that this is a fast, clear, cool-to-moderate freshwater stream, not a still, warm, or blackwater habitat. Data on the species' broader distribution beyond the type locality is sparse — it may occur more widely in the Surma-Meghna drainage, but this has not been documented.
Feeding
No dietary study has been published for Schistura syngkai specifically, but its build and habitat place it squarely among the micro-predatory stone loaches: a bottom-dwelling forager that picks small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, worms — off gravel and stones in fast-flowing water, supplementing this with algae and biofilm grazed from submerged rock surfaces. This is the standard feeding mode for Schistura and its Nemacheilidae relatives across the Himalayan foothills.
Were it ever to be kept, a diet built around small sinking live and frozen foods (bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp) alongside quality sinking pellets would suit a fish of this build far better than flake, which stone loaches of this type tend to ignore in favour of food that reaches the bottom.
Mating
Nothing has been published on courtship or spawning behaviour in Schistura syngkai. The original description is a taxonomic paper concerned with morphology, meristics and type locality, not reproductive biology, and no subsequent study appears to have followed up. Data on this species' reproduction is, at present, essentially absent.
What can be said comes from the broader pattern in Nemacheilidae: stone and brook loaches typically pair or gather loosely in flowing water without elaborate courtship display, with spawning triggered by rising water levels and temperature shifts tied to the monsoon season across their South and Southeast Asian range.
Breeding
There is no record of Schistura syngkai being bred, or even kept, in captivity — it has never entered the aquarium trade and remains known only from its type series. Based on the general biology of Nemacheilidae, the expected mode is an egg-scatterer: females release adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care given afterward. This is consistent across the family, from other Schistura to Barbatula and the related brook loaches of Europe and Central Asia.
As with the great majority of stone and brook loaches, there is no realistic expectation of home breeding for this species even in principle — it is a narrow-range stream endemic that has never been collected for the trade, and the honest position is that its breeding biology is simply undocumented.
In the aquarium
Schistura syngkai is not, as far as available records show, present in the aquarium trade — it has no history of collection or export, and this article exists to document the species accurately rather than to recommend it as a purchase. Its size — the holotype at 1.5 in SL suggests a fully adult length in the range of most small Schistura, likely under 2.5 in total length — and its stream-loach build indicate it would need the same husbandry any small cool-to-mild-water Nemacheilidae requires: strong water flow, high dissolved oxygen, a hard substrate of gravel and stone, and stable, clean water, rather than a warm, still community tank.
As with all near-scaleless loaches, any future captive specimens would need cautious dosing — half-strength treatments and copper-free medications — since the group is broadly more sensitive to standard fish medicines than scaled fish. For now, though, this is a scientific-record species rather than an aquarium one.
Conservation
Schistura syngkai has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status here is recorded honestly as Not Evaluated rather than guessed at. Described only in 2019 from a single stream locality, it is a textbook example of the many narrow-range Himalayan-foothill stone loaches that likely qualify for formal assessment but have simply not yet been reviewed.
Because its entire documented range is one small stream near a village and adjacent rice paddies in Meghalaya, any land-use change, water pollution or agricultural runoff affecting the Twahdidoh could plausibly threaten the population — but no population trend, threat assessment or survey data has been published to confirm or quantify this. The species is not known to be part of the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not a documented concern; habitat integrity in its home stream is the more relevant, if unquantified, consideration.
