Taxonomy & naming
Schistura thanho was formally described by Jörg Freyhof and Dmitry Serov in 2001. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — the largest family of loaches, comprising hundreds of small, mostly scaleless species distributed across streams from Europe through the Middle East, the Himalaya and Central Asia to East and Southeast Asia. The genus Schistura is itself one of the most species-rich loach genera, with many members known only from a single river system, as is the case here.
The species epithet honours the Tha Nho, an ethnic minority group of Binh Dinh Province near the fish's type locality. As with many recently described Nemacheilidae, older literature or database entries may still group this species loosely under the historic catch-all genus Nemacheilus; the Catalog of Fishes governs the valid combination, and it is retained here as Schistura thanho.
Morphology
Schistura thanho is a small, elongate stone loach, reaching a maximum recorded size of about 3.5 in standard length — modest even by the standards of the genus. Like other members of Nemacheilidae it has a slender, near-scaleless body suited to a life spent tight against the substrate in fast current, and — as is typical for the family — it carries a small erectile spine below the eye that can be flicked out defensively.
Detailed morphological and colour-pattern data for this species have not been captured from the sources reviewed here; as a narrowly endemic, recently described riffle-dweller, published descriptive detail beyond the type description is limited. What is documented is consistent with the wider genus: a torpedo-shaped, bottom-hugging body built for holding position in strong current rather than for open-water swimming.
Habitat
This species is endemic to Vietnam, known only from the Vinh Thanh River drainage (Ha Giao River) in Binh Dinh Province, Central Vietnam — as far as recorded, it does not occur anywhere outside this single river system. It lives in fast-flowing, clear, rocky streams, holding in riffles where dissolved oxygen is high, a habitat typical of Schistura across its range.
Specific water temperature and pH have not been documented for this species in the sources reviewed; the general expectation for a riffle-dwelling tropical-to-subtropical Schistura is cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated, fast-moving stream water, and that should be treated as an informed inference rather than a measured figure for this exact population.
Feeding
Schistura thanho is a micro-predator, foraging over the streambed for small invertebrates, insect larvae and crustaceans; FishBase records it at a trophic level of about 3.0, consistent with a mid-level invertebrate hunter rather than a grazer or scavenger. This matches the typical diet of stone and brook loaches, which pick prey from among gravel and rock in fast water rather than browsing algae or biofilm.
No aquarium feeding data has been documented for this species specifically. Based on its wild diet and genus, it would be expected to take small live and frozen invertebrate foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped worms) offered at the bottom, and may be reluctant to compete for flake or floating food.
Mating
No data on courtship, sexual dimorphism, or spawning behaviour has been documented for Schistura thanho in the sources reviewed. This is unsurprising for a narrowly endemic, recently described riffle species with no established presence in the aquarium trade — field or captive breeding observations simply do not appear to exist yet.
What can be said follows from its family: Nemacheilidae are egg-scatterers rather than mouthbrooders or cave-spawners, with no known parental care in the genus Schistura, and spawning where documented tends to occur over gravel or among stones in flowing water.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented for this species, in the aquarium or in the wild. As is typical for stone and brook loaches, the expected mode is an egg-scatterer over gravel and rock in fast, well-oxygenated water, with no parental care — but this is inferred from the family and genus rather than observed directly for Schistura thanho.
Given the species is not established in the aquarium trade and its habitat needs (cool, fast, highly oxygenated water) are demanding to replicate, captive breeding should be considered essentially unattempted. The honest summary is: rarely or never bred in the aquarium, and data sparse even in the wild.
In the aquarium
Schistura thanho has no meaningful presence in the aquarium hobby, and the sources reviewed here document no husbandry history for it. Any care approach must therefore be extrapolated cautiously from its habitat and its genus, not stated as established fact.
Were it to be kept, its riffle habitat implies a need for cool-to-moderate, very well-oxygenated water with strong current — a powerhead or high-turnover filter return, a rocky, current-swept substrate, and stable water quality would be the starting point, alongside small sinking invertebrate foods. As with other scaleless nemacheilids, it should be assumed sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, warranting half-dose, careful treatment if disease occurs. Given its Critically limited range and unknown husbandry, this is not a species to source casually — any specimens in the trade, if they exist at all, would be wild-collected from a single, already-pressured river system.
Conservation
Schistura thanho is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Endangered, based on a 2010 assessment using criteria B1ab(ii,iii)+2ab(ii,iii) — reflecting its known occurrence in a single, restricted river system with continuing decline in habitat extent and quality. FishBase similarly reports the species restricted to its type locality drainage with no other known populations.
Threats include overfishing, habitat degradation from dam construction, deforestation, and stream siltation — pressures common to small-range Vietnamese stream endemics. Because this species is known only from the Vinh Thanh/Ha Giao River system, any of these pressures acting on that single drainage represents a direct threat to the entire species; there is no documented aquarium-trade pressure, as the species has no established presence in the hobby.
