Taxonomy & naming
Schistura tigrina was formally described in 2005 by W. Vishwanath and K. Nebeshwar Sharma, two ichthyologists who have described numerous Schistura species from the loach-rich rivers of Manipur and the wider Brahmaputra basin. It sits in the genus Schistura, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, with several hundred described species spread across Asia and into Europe. Nemacheilidae has been heavily reshuffled since the mid-twentieth century, when many of its species sat in the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus; most Indian and Southeast Asian species, including this one, are now placed in Schistura on the basis of fin-ray counts, lateral-line development and other characters used to split the older genera apart.
Some regional biodiversity databases record the species under the alternate spelling Schistura tigrinum, but Schistura tigrina is the name used by FishBase and reflected in the original description; the Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid combination. No synonyms or subsequent taxonomic changes are noted in the sources consulted here.
Morphology
Schistura tigrina is a small loach, reaching about 3.5 in in standard length — modest even by the standards of a family built from small fish. FishBase describes dark brown transverse bars crossing the body, the tiger-striped pattern that gives the species its epithet, along with a moderately high adipose crest running along the caudal peduncle, a feature used to distinguish it from closely related Schistura species in the same river system.
As in other members of the genus, the body plan is that of a benthic, current-adapted micro-predator: an elongate, subcylindrical body, a flattened ventral surface for holding position on the substrate, and — where present in the genus — a small erectile spine below the eye. Nemacheilid loaches are also effectively naked-skinned, carrying tiny or absent scales, which leaves them with the same medication sensitivity seen across the loach group generally. Beyond the banding pattern and the adipose crest noted in the original description and FishBase, detailed morphometric data for this species is sparse.
Habitat
The species is known from the Barak River system in Tamenglong District, Manipur, India — specifically the type locality at Khunphung on the Barak — within the wider Brahmaputra drainage of northeastern India. This is classic Schistura country: clear, rocky, fast-flowing hill and foothill streams, cool to moderately warm depending on elevation and season, with a stony or gravel substrate and high dissolved oxygen from constant turbulent flow.
No other localities are documented in the sources available, and the species appears to be a narrow-range endemic restricted to this single river system. Like many Nemacheilidae described from small streams in the eastern Himalayan foothills, its full distribution and habitat tolerances beyond the type locality are not well studied — a common and honest limitation for stone loaches from this region, where new species continue to be described from streams that have barely been surveyed.
Feeding
Schistura tigrina is a benthic micro-predator, foraging over rocky and gravel substrate in fast water for small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrate prey typical of clear, oxygen-rich hill streams. FishBase records a trophic level of 3.0, consistent with a diet built from small invertebrate prey rather than algae or detritus.
No specific feeding data for this species has been recorded beyond that trophic placement, but the pattern holds across Schistura generally: these are active hunters that pick prey off stones and from among gravel, not passive grazers. In captivity, related Schistura species are reported to take small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm readily, while often ignoring dry flake — a reasonable expectation for this species as well, though it has not itself been kept or fed under aquarium conditions in any documented account.
Mating
No courtship, spawning behaviour or sexual dimorphism has been documented for Schistura tigrina in the sources available. This is typical for the genus: most Schistura are narrow-range stream endemics known chiefly from museum specimens and field surveys, and their reproductive biology in the wild has rarely been studied in detail, let alone observed in aquaria.
By analogy with better-studied Nemacheilidae, stone and brook loaches are presumed to spawn as fast-water fish generally do — releasing eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water rather than forming pairs or defending a nest — but this has not been confirmed for this species specifically, and it should be read as an inference from the family rather than an observed fact.
Breeding
There is no record of Schistura tigrina being bred in captivity, and data on its reproduction generally is sparse. What is known of Nemacheilidae as a family points to a simple egg-scattering strategy: eggs released over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry. This is consistent with the pattern across the stone and brook loaches, which — unlike gobies or many cichlids — do not guard nests or mouthbrood.
Honest reporting matters here: stone loaches like this one are rarely kept and essentially never bred by hobbyists. The combination of a narrow, undocumented native range, an Endangered conservation status and the total absence of aquarium-trade or captive-breeding records means this species should be treated as a scientific curiosity rather than a fish anyone should expect to source, keep or spawn at home.
In the aquarium
Schistura tigrina has no documented aquarium history — it does not appear in the hobby literature, and no care profile exists for the species specifically. What can be said comes from the genus and family: Schistura generally are cool-to-moderate, fast-flowing-water specialists that need strong current, high dissolved oxygen, a stony or gravel substrate, and clear, well-filtered water to do well, conditions that are considerably more demanding to replicate than a standard still community tank.
As a near-scaleless loach, any captive Schistura would be expected to share the family's sensitivity to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, calling for reduced dosing and careful monitoring if disease treatment were ever needed. Given the Endangered status and the total lack of any trade or husbandry record, this species is not one to seek out for the aquarium; it is presented here as a documented part of the Nemacheilidae fauna of the Brahmaputra basin rather than as a fish available to keepers.
Conservation
Schistura tigrina is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, an assessment recorded as dating to 21 January 2010. As a narrow endemic apparently confined to the Barak River system in Manipur, India, it fits a pattern common among Nemacheilidae from the eastern Himalayan foothills: species restricted to a single stream or small river system, and therefore acutely vulnerable to localized habitat degradation, pollution, damming or land-use change within that one catchment.
There is no evidence of an aquarium trade in this species — it is not documented as being collected, sold or bred for the hobby — so any pressure on its population is understood to be habitat-driven rather than collection-driven. Its Endangered status underlines how many of the described species in this vast family are known from very limited ranges and how easily localized environmental pressure on a single river system can threaten a species' entire known population.
