Taxonomy & naming
Schistura tirapensis was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1990, one of dozens of Schistura species he named while working through the stone-loach faunas of South and Southeast Asia. Its species epithet, tirapensis, refers directly to the type locality — the Tirap District of Arunachal Pradesh, India — and the type specimens were collected from the Riwa River at Manpong (also spelled Nampong).
The genus Schistura sits within the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches, which was itself split out from the older, broader Balitoridae/Nemacheilinae arrangement as the group's taxonomy was revised through the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Many species now placed in Schistura were originally described in the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for the current combination, and it lists this species as Schistura tirapensis, Kottelat, 1990.
Morphology
This is a small fish even by stone-loach standards, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 2 in standard length. It shows the typical Schistura body plan: an elongate, cylindrical trunk, a pointed head, and a pattern of 10–11 regular dark bands crossing the body. The dorsal fin carries eight branched rays and is set back on the body, with its origin closer to the base of the tail than to the tip of the snout — a proportion that helps distinguish it from related species. The caudal fin is forked.
A diagnostic feature is its incomplete lateral line, which terminates at the base of the pelvic fin rather than running the full length of the body, a trait shared with many but not all of its close relatives. As in other members of the family, the skin is essentially scaleless to the eye, and Schistura species typically carry a small erectile spine below the eye — a feature of the broader loach lineage worth keeping in mind when handling or medicating any stone loach, even though it has not been specifically documented for this species in the available sources.
Habitat
Schistura tirapensis is known only from its type locality, the Riwa River at Manpong (Nampong) in the Tirap District of Arunachal Pradesh, in the far northeastern hill country of India. FishBase records it from subtropical hill-stream habitat with a pebble substrate — the classic Schistura environment of clear, fast-flowing water running over stone and gravel rather than sand, mud or leaf litter.
Exact temperature and pH figures have not been published for this species, and given the narrow single-stream record, that gap is unsurprising rather than a red flag: many Schistura from remote hill drainages are known from a handful of specimens and one collection event. What can be said with confidence, based on the habitat and the wider genus, is that this is a cool-to-mild subtropical hill-stream fish adapted to fast, well-oxygenated, current-swept water — not a warm, still, blackwater species.
Feeding
No specific dietary study of Schistura tirapensis has been published in the sources available here, so the honest answer is that its exact diet is undocumented. Like the great majority of Schistura and other Nemacheilidae, it almost certainly forages as a bottom-dwelling micro-predator, picking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other benthic prey — from among the pebbles and gravel of its fast-flowing home stream.
As with feeding, aquarium diet has not been documented for this species specifically. Any keeper working with true Schistura stone loaches should plan around that presumed micro-predatory habit: small sinking live and frozen foods rather than flake, offered where a swift-moving bottom fish can find them.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been recorded for Schistura tirapensis. Maturity data is explicitly flagged as sparse even in the FishBase account, and no aquarium or field observations of pairing or spawning have been published for this species.
What can be said comes from the wider genus rather than this species directly: stone and brook loaches of the Nemacheilidae are, as far as is documented, egg-scattering fish with no pair bond and no nest — spawning is a matter of releasing eggs over gravel in fast water rather than any elaborate courtship. There is no basis for assuming anything more specific for S. tirapensis, and no basis at all for a cave-guarding or mouthbrooding story, which belongs to entirely different fish groups.
Breeding
Schistura tirapensis has never been reported to breed in captivity, and its reproduction has not been studied in the wild beyond the bare fact that it is a described, distinct species. This fits the pattern for the vast majority of Schistura: they are collected, described, and in most cases never kept or bred by hobbyists at all.
Based on the reproductive mode documented across the genus and family, the presumed pattern is an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward. There is no evidence of any guarding, mouthbrooding or nest-building behaviour in this species or its close relatives. For a keeper, the honest expectation should be that this is a species that is rarely if ever bred in the aquarium, and data on its reproduction remains genuinely sparse.
In the aquarium
Schistura tirapensis is not an established aquarium fish — it does not appear to be part of the ornamental trade, and no specific care profile has been published for it. Any care guidance has to be extrapolated cautiously from its wild habitat and its close relatives in the genus, and should be treated as a starting point rather than settled fact.
A hill-stream Schistura of this kind would be expected to need cool-to-mild, fast-flowing, heavily-oxygenated water over a gravel or pebble substrate — closer to a powerhead-and-airstone hillstream setup than a typical still community tank — plus the caution that applies to nearly scaleless loaches generally: gentleness with medications, since this group as a whole tends to be sensitive to copper and full-strength treatments. At barely 2.5 in, it would not need a large tank by loach standards, but its need for current and oxygen would matter more than its footprint. Because so little is documented, anyone attempting to keep this species should treat it as an experimental, specialist proposition rather than a routine one.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Schistura tirapensis as Least Concern on 21 January 2010, with a low computed vulnerability to fishing pressure (10 of 100) and only minimal data available on its population resilience, reflecting how little study this narrow-range species has received rather than any confirmed sign of abundance across a wide area.
Because it is known only from a single hill stream in the Tirap District of Arunachal Pradesh, its conservation picture is really the conservation picture of that one stream: any habitat disturbance, siltation or pollution affecting the Riwa River at Manpong would fall directly on the entire known population of this species. There is no indication in the available sources that it is targeted by the aquarium trade, wild-collected or otherwise, and no evidence of population decline — but the narrow endemism itself is the point worth flagging for a fish with only one documented locality.
