Taxonomy & naming
Schistura tizardi was described by Maurice Kottelat in 2000 and placed in the genus Schistura, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. The Catalog of Fishes lists it under this combination, and there is no indication of an older, superseded genus placement for this particular species; it has carried the name Schistura tizardi since its description.
The species epithet honours Robert Tizard. Nemacheilidae as a whole has been heavily reshuffled over the decades — many species once lumped into a broad Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus have since been redistributed among Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and other genera — but S. tizardi has no such history attached to it in the available sources; it was erected directly in Schistura and remains there.
Morphology
Schistura tizardi is a small loach, reaching only about 2 in in standard length, consistent with the compact size typical of stream-dwelling Schistura. The body carries a bold pattern of 7 to 9 dark bars crossing the flanks, plus a distinct black bar at the base of the tail — a pattern that likely helps break up its outline against the gravel and cobble it lives on.
As in other members of the genus, the fish is a true loach in the structural sense: it carries the near-scaleless, or very finely scaled, skin typical of the group, and Schistura species generally possess the small erectile suborbital spine characteristic of the wider Cobitoidea, used defensively and a factor in how the fish should be handled. Habitat
This species is known from the Xe Kong basin, a tributary system of the Mekong River in Attapu Province, southern Laos, with its type locality at the Xe Kaman near Muang Xaisettha. It is benthopelagic and lives in main river channels over gravel beds — the fast-flowing, clear, well-oxygenated water typical of the stony reaches that Schistura species favour throughout tropical Asia.
As with many single-basin Schistura, the full extent of its range within the Xe Kong system is not well documented in available sources, and there is no indication it has been recorded outside Laos. This is a purely freshwater fish of flowing, gravel-bottomed rivers, not a still-water or brackish species.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary data for Schistura tizardi is available in the sources consulted. Based on the well-established pattern for Schistura and other stone loaches of fast, clear streams, it is reasonable to describe it as a benthic micro-predator — a fish that forages over gravel and cobble for small invertebrates such as insect larvae and tiny crustaceans, picking prey items out of the current rather than grazing algae or biofilm.

Like other stone and brook loaches, it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, without any parental care — the general pattern for Nemacheilidae — but this is inferred from the family rather than observed directly in this species.
Data on this fish is sparse across the board, and breeding is no exception: there are no aquarium spawning reports to draw on. Anyone hoping to breed it would essentially be starting from the family-level pattern (flowing, oxygen-rich water, a scattering of eggs over gravel, no guarding) with no species-specific playbook to follow.
In the aquarium
Schistura tizardi is not an established aquarium fish; it does not appear to be part of the ornamental trade, and specific care guidance from keepers is not available. What can be said is drawn from its biology and from the general care needs of small stream-dwelling Schistura: it would need cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing water over a gravel or fine-cobble substrate, strong filtration to replicate current, and — being a near-scaleless loach — careful, reduced-dose medication if disease treatment is ever needed, since scaleless fish absorb many medications, and copper in particular, more readily than scaled species.
At under 2 in, it would not need a large tank by loach standards, but it would need a setup built around current and oxygen rather than the calmer, planted community tanks that suit many other small fish. Given the total absence of husbandry reports, anyone encountering this species in the trade should treat every care parameter as provisional and prioritise gentle handling and high water quality above all.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Schistura tizardi as Data Deficient on 20 January 2011, reflecting how little is known about its population size, trends and full distribution within the Xe Kong basin. It is not listed under CITES or CMS.
As a narrow-range endemic of a single Mekong tributary system in Laos, it sits in the same position as many small Schistura: it may be genuinely uncommon, or it may simply be under-surveyed, and without further fieldwork it is not possible to say which. Development pressures on Mekong tributaries generally — damming, sedimentation, and altered flow regimes — are a plausible long-term concern for gravel-bed rheophilic fish like this one, but there is no documented population trend for this species specifically, and none should be implied.
