Taxonomy & naming
Schistura wanlainensis was described by Maurice Kottelat in 2017, part of a paper covering a new genus and three new species of nemacheilid loaches from the northern Irrawaddy drainage of Myanmar, published in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, which forms part of the superfamily Cobitoidea alongside the botiids, cobitids and hillstream loaches.
Nemacheilidae has been heavily reshuffled over the past two decades — many species once lumped into a broad Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus have since been redistributed across genera such as Schistura, Triplophysa and Barbatula as the family's taxonomy has been clarified. Schistura is itself the largest genus in the family, with well over 200 described species across South and Southeast Asia, and new species — including this one — continue to be described from poorly surveyed headwater streams. The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid combination Schistura wanlainensis.
Morphology
Schistura wanlainensis is a small loach, reaching only around 3.5 in in standard length in the type material — modest even by the standards of a genus built from small-bodied stream fish. As in other Schistura, the body is elongate and near-cylindrical, the skin effectively naked to the eye with tiny, deeply embedded scales, and an erectile spine sits in a groove beneath each eye — the suborbital spine shared across the loach superfamily, used defensively and easily missed until the fish is startled or handled.
Detailed colour pattern and fin-ray counts are part of the original 2017 description; beyond the confirmed size and general Schistura build, published morphological detail specific to this species is sparse, and no aquarium-trade photographs or accounts are documented. That scaleless skin is worth flagging early, since it carries directly into how the species should be handled and, if ever kept, medicated.
Habitat
The species is known from Mon Lan Chaung, a tributary of the Mali Hka in the northern Irrawaddy drainage of Kachin State, Myanmar — the type locality, and so far the only confirmed site for the species. The surrounding region is one of fast, clear, stone- and boulder-bottomed hill streams typical of the northern Irrawaddy headwaters, and the local community at Wan Lain Dam village, near where the type series was collected, has established a fish conservation zone on the stream.
Specific temperature and pH data for Mon Lan Chaung were not captured in research for this profile, and none of the available sources report measured values. Given the setting and the habits of its close relatives, the stream is presumably cool to moderate in temperature, clear, fast-flowing and well-oxygenated over a stone and boulder substrate — but that inference should be read as a reasonable expectation for the genus, not a confirmed reading for this exact population.
Feeding
Schistura wanlainensis is presumed to be an omnivorous micro-predator, in line with the genus as a whole: a bottom forager taking small insects, insect larvae, crustaceans and zooplankton picked from among stones and gravel in fast water. No feeding study specific to this species has been published.
Were it ever kept, the expectation from related Schistura is a fish that does best on small live and frozen foods — Daphnia, Artemia, bloodworm and similar — and that will take sinking pellets but should not be fed exclusively on dried foods, which do not reflect the varied invertebrate diet it forages for in the wild.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Schistura wanlainensis, and there is no evidence the species has ever been observed breeding, in the wild or in captivity. Nothing is published on sexual dimorphism for this species either — a routine gap for a Schistura known from a single stream and a small type series.
Breeding
There is no record of Schistura wanlainensis being bred in the aquarium, and no field data on its reproductive biology beyond the fact of its existence in Mon Lan Chaung. Based on the general pattern for stone and brook loaches, the presumed mode is an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care — but this is an inference from the genus, not an observation of this species.
This honesty matters: Nemacheilidae as a family is rarely bred by hobbyists, and a narrow-range, recently described species like this one, absent from the aquarium trade entirely, has essentially no documented breeding history to draw on. Data is sparse, and it should be reported as sparse rather than filled in with a confident-sounding guess.
In the aquarium
Schistura wanlainensis does not appear to be established in the aquarium trade, and no husbandry account for the species could be found. What follows is drawn from the genus rather than from any direct account of this fish. Schistura species are generally territorial toward their own kind and are usually recommended either singly or in a large enough group that aggression is diffused, alongside robust, fast-water-tolerant tankmates rather than slow or delicate ones — a lone or lightly-stocked pair is the setup most likely to produce bullying.
As with other nemacheilids, the near-scaleless skin means any wild-collected or trade specimen would need cautious medication — half-strength doses and copper-free treatments — and close watching for parasites, since scaleless loaches are typically quick to show ich. Cool, clear, fast, well-oxygenated water over stone and boulder substrate, matching the type locality, is the sensible baseline if the species were ever available; there is no basis in the sources for treating it as a warm, still-water fish.
Conservation
Schistura wanlainensis has not been assessed by the IUCN and is listed as Not Evaluated. It is known only from its type locality, Mon Lan Chaung, a tributary of the Mali Hka in the northern Irrawaddy drainage of Myanmar's Kachin State — a single-stream endemic in the pattern typical of recently described Schistura.
Notably, the local community at Wan Lain Dam village, near the collection site, has established its own fish conservation zone on the stream — a grassroots protective measure that predates any formal IUCN assessment. With no trade presence and no broader distribution data, the main conservation-relevant fact is simply how narrow its known range is: the loss or degradation of a single headwater stream could plausibly affect the entire known population of the species.
