Schistura yersini is a small stone loach known only from a pair of mountain rivers near Dalat in southern Vietnam, the Dong Nai and the Srepok. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the family of true "stone" or "brook" loaches — the largest loach family and one dominated by small, bold, clear-water micro-predators that have been split, over the past two decades, out of the old broad genus Nemacheilus into narrower groups like Schistura. This species lives in fast, rocky riffles and rapids with current well over a metre per second, and it is genuinely data-sparse: almost nothing has been published on it beyond its original description and a Data Deficient Red List listing, so honesty about the limits of what is known matters more here than filling gaps with guesswork.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura yersini was described in 2001 by Jörg Freyhof and Nikolai Serov, part of a wave of Indochinese stone-loach descriptions that followed the broader taxonomic split of the old catch-all genus Nemacheilus (sometimes spelled Noemacheilus in older literature) into narrower, better-defined genera. Schistura is now one of the largest genera of freshwater fish in the world, and Nemacheilidae as a whole is the largest of the loach families — a reflection of how many small, superficially similar stream loaches remain to be resolved across South and Southeast Asia. The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid combination, and it stands as Schistura yersini; no synonymy or genus change is indicated for this species.

The species epithet honours Alexandre Yersin, the Swiss-French physician and bacteriologist who spent much of his working life in southern Vietnam, including the Dalat highlands where this loach was collected — a fitting namesake for a fish restricted to that same corner of the country.

Morphology

Schistura yersini is a small loach, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 2.5 in standard length, in keeping with the modest size typical of Nemacheilidae. Like other members of the family it is an elongate, low-slung, bottom-hugging fish built for holding position against current rather than for open swimming.

As in other true loaches, the skin carries very small, deeply embedded scales that leave the fish functionally near-scaleless — a trait that matters for how sensitive it is to disease and medication in captivity. Detailed published description of its colour pattern and fin structure beyond the original taxonomic account is not available in the sources consulted here, so specific markings are best confirmed against the original species description rather than assumed.

Habitat

This species is known only from two mountain rivers near Dalat in the central highlands of southern Vietnam: the Dong Nai and the Srepok. Both are fast, rocky watercourses, and Schistura yersini is reported as abundant in streams and rivers with gravel or rocky substrate, where it concentrates most heavily in riffles and rapids with current velocities exceeding one metre per second — genuinely torrential water by aquarium standards.

Notably, it has also been recorded as resistant to organic pollution, persisting in stream reaches that run through villages — a useful data point on its tolerance, though not a licence to treat it as an easy fish. Its core habitat requirement is clear even where other details are sparse: cool-to-moderate, swift, well-oxygenated, rocky-bottomed mountain stream water, not the warm, still, soft blackwater that many aquarium loaches are wrongly assumed to need.

Feeding

No species-specific dietary study is available for Schistura yersini, but its body plan and habitat place it firmly among the micro-predatory stone loaches typical of Nemacheilidae: a bottom-forager picking small invertebrates, insect larvae and crustaceans from among gravel and rock in fast, clear water.

In the aquarium, this pattern translates into a fish that should be offered small sinking live and frozen foods — bloodworm, chopped mysis, daphnia and similar — and that may largely ignore flake or fare poorly on it. As with related species, feeding should be aimed at the bottom, where this loach spends essentially all its time.

Mating

No information on courtship, sexing or spawning behaviour has been published for Schistura yersini specifically. Stone and brook loaches of this genus are not known for pronounced external sexual dimorphism, and nothing in the available sources suggests this species is an exception. In the absence of direct data, the honest position is that its reproductive behaviour in the wild is undescribed.

Breeding

As with the great majority of Nemacheilidae, Schistura yersini has no documented aquarium spawning record. Stone and brook loaches as a group are egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward — quite unlike the cave-guarding or mouthbrooding strategies seen in some other fish groups, which do not apply to this family at all. Even in the wild, published reproductive biology for this species is essentially absent.

Given how narrow its known range is and how little has been studied, breeding should be assumed to be, at best, rarely attempted and unverified in captivity. Anyone keeping this species should treat it as a display and conservation-interest fish rather than a breeding project, and should document any reproductive behaviour observed, since so little is currently known.

In the aquarium

Schistura yersini is not an established aquarium staple, and specific husbandry data is limited, but its wild habitat sets clear expectations. It comes from fast, cool-to-moderate, heavily oxygenated rocky streams, so a tank needs strong flow — well beyond what a typical community filter provides — a rocky or gravel substrate, and consistently clean, well-oxygenated water; this is not a fish for a slow, warm, densely planted tank. Estimating from related Schistura species, a temperature in roughly the 72–79 °F range and a near-neutral pH of about 6.5–7.5 is a reasonable starting point, though this is an inference rather than a value measured for this species itself.

Being near-scaleless like other true loaches, it should be treated with caution around copper-based and full-strength medications, with half-doses and gentle products preferred. Keepers should also be aware that, because it is known from only two rivers in a small area of Vietnam, any specimens in the trade are almost certainly wild-collected rather than farm-bred, which raises the same collecting-pressure concerns that apply to other narrow-range stream endemics.

Conservation

Schistura yersini is listed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2010 (reference T188089A1852941, assessor V. Huckstorf). Data Deficient does not mean the species is safe; it means too little is known — population size, trend and the full extent of threats — to assign a category of actual risk, which is itself telling for a fish known from just two mountain rivers near Dalat.

A narrow range of this kind carries inherent vulnerability to habitat degradation, damming, sedimentation and pollution of its home rivers, even though the species has shown some tolerance of organic pollution near villages. With no update to its assessment since 2010 and no population data collected in the sources available here, the responsible statement is that its conservation status is genuinely unresolved rather than reassuring.
