Taxonomy & naming
Tuberoschistura baenzigeri was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1983, hence the parentheses around the authority — a sign the species has since been moved from its original genus placement into the genus Tuberoschistura, part of the broad reshuffling that has affected the old Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus complex over the past few decades. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, containing hundreds of small, often narrowly distributed stream species across Eurasia.
The species epithet honours Hans Bänziger, a Swiss entomologist who assisted Kottelat in the field near Chiang Mai, Thailand. As with many Nemacheilidae, the genus-level taxonomy of this group has been revised repeatedly as material is re-examined, and Tuberoschistura baenzigeri should be treated as the current, Catalog of Fishes-recognized combination rather than any older name that may appear in historic literature.
Morphology
This is a small, slender stone loach, with FishBase reporting a maximum standard length of only about 1.5 in — among the smaller members of an already small-bodied family. Like other nemacheilids it has the characteristic elongated, near-cylindrical body of a bottom-dwelling stream fish, with barbels around the mouth for feeling out food on the substrate, and the near-scaleless or fine-scaled skin typical of the group, which makes these fish sensitive to harsh water conditions and medication.
