Vanmanenia polylepis is a hillstream loach of the family Gastromyzontidae (Balitoridae sensu lato) described from southern China in 1983, and native to the fast-flowing, oxygen-rich streams of the Zhu-Jiang (Pearl River) drainage in Guangdong Province, as well as waters in northern Vietnam and Laos. Like all hillstream loaches it is built for torrent life: a flattened, streamlined body with paired pectoral and pelvic fins spread wide to form a hydrodynamic sucker, letting it grip rock in flows that would sweep other fish away. It is a biofilm and aufwuchs grazer that demands cool, fast, highly oxygenated water and a mature, algae-covered rockscape — and like every member of its tribe it dies quietly in a warm, still, bare tank, the single most common way the hobby loses these fish. It has not been assessed by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Vanmanenia polylepis was described by Pan, Liu and Zhang in 1983, based on material from Guangdong Province in southern China. The genus Vanmanenia was erected for a group of hillstream loaches within the family Balitoridae as that family was broadly delimited through much of the twentieth century. Contemporary classification places the genus in Gastromyzontidae, one of the families carved out of old Balitoridae as molecular and morphological work revealed that the original family was polyphyletic; some authorities continue to use Balitoridae in a stricter sense. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the arbiter of the valid combination; the genus Vanmanenia itself is retained. The specific epithet polylepis refers to the scale count — from Greek poly ('many') and lepis ('scale') — and was one character used to distinguish this species when it was described.

The species has at various times been considered a junior synonym of Vanmanenia pingchowensis, the most widespread member of the genus; current treatment regards V. polylepis as valid in its own right. The taxonomy of Vanmanenia and related gastromyzontid genera (Crossostoma, Formosania, Hemimyzon, Sinogastromyzon) remains under active revision, so literature records may use different combinations. Rostral barbels are present, a character shared across much of the genus.

Morphology

Vanmanenia polylepis shares the body plan common to hillstream loaches adapted to fast-water environments: the body is markedly depressed and streamlined from head to tail, and the pectoral and pelvic fins are spread horizontally and enlarged so that, together with the flattened belly, they create a suction surface against rock. The mouth is positioned on the underside of the head and is adapted for rasping biofilm from hard substrates. Lips are fleshy and often papillate, giving a firm purchase on algae-covered rock.

Relative to botiid loaches, Vanmanenia lacks the prominent erectile suborbital spine (that character is found in the family Cobitidae and Botiidae); the body is covered in small, dense scales — the 'many-scaled' feature that names this species. Coloration is cryptic, typically a brownish to olive-tan base with darker mottling or irregular banding that breaks up the outline against a stony stream bed. Precise maximum size for this species is not well documented in the accessible literature; hillstream loaches of this genus are generally small, in the range of 2–3 in total length, though specimens may vary.

Habitat

In the wild, Vanmanenia polylepis inhabits fast-flowing hill streams and upper river reaches of the Zhu-Jiang (Pearl River) system in Guangdong Province, southern China, with the range extending into comparable drainages of northern Vietnam and Laos. These are stony, clear-water torrents running over boulder, cobble and gravel substrates in hilly or mountainous terrain, typically at elevations where the water remains cool even in summer. Dissolved oxygen is high because the turbulent flow constantly replenishes it; temperatures in such streams fluctuate seasonally but remain substantially cooler than lowland tropical rivers.

The habitat is rheophilic in the fullest sense: the fish spends its life gripping exposed rock surfaces in the current, moving from stone to stone to feed, and retreating to interstices and crevices among boulders for shelter. The water is typically clear and oligotrophic, with a thin but critical coating of diatoms, green algae and biofilm on every illuminated rock surface — the primary food source for the species. Silt and organic enrichment are absent in healthy habitat; water quality is high by default because the current removes settled matter continuously.

Feeding

Vanmanenia polylepis is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. It rasps diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria and the associated meiofauna (tiny invertebrates living within the biofilm matrix) from rock and hard substrates using its underslung, papillate mouth. This mode of feeding ties it absolutely to a mature surface: in a tank where rockwork has been scrubbed clean or where the setup is too new to carry a biofilm, the fish starves even when other foods are available, because it is not adapted to searching for discrete food items in open water or on bare substrate.

In the aquarium, the diet must be supplemented once the biofilm alone is insufficient. Sinking wafers and pellets formulated for algae-grazers (Spirulina-based products), blanched greens such as zucchini, spinach or cucumber, and occasional small frozen foods (daphnia, baby brine shrimp) are appropriate additions. The fish feeds primarily at the surface of rocks and glass, and is not a competitor for mid-water or surface food; take care that food reaches the bottom and that boisterous tank-mates do not out-compete it.

Mating

Sexing Vanmanenia polylepis in the aquarium is not straightforward. As with most hillstream loaches of this size, females are likely to be somewhat deeper-bodied when gravid, but reliable external characters for sex determination have not been documented for this species in accessible literature. In related gastromyzontid species studied in the wild, adults hold territories on rock surfaces during the breeding season and males may display to females, but the behavioural details for V. polylepis specifically are not on record.

In nature, spawning almost certainly corresponds to seasonal cues — changes in water temperature, flow rate and day length associated with the spring or early monsoon period, when snowmelt and rainfall increase stream discharge and oxygen levels peak. These cues are difficult to replicate in a home aquarium, and there is no documented account of V. polylepis spawning in captivity. A keeper should not expect to breed this species under normal aquarium conditions.

Breeding

Vanmanenia polylepis is not bred in home aquaria; no verified accounts appear in the accessible hobbyist or scientific literature. It is an egg-scatterer: like other gastromyzontid hillstream loaches it deposits eggs among stones and gravel in fast water, with no parental care after spawning. The eggs, once laid, are left to develop in the current.

A small number of hillstream loach species — most notably Sewellia lineolata — have been induced to spawn in mature, strongly-flowing river tanks maintained at the correct cool temperatures and with a well-developed biofilm. The conditions required are demanding: high flow, cool water, excellent water quality, a mature tank with dense algal growth on the rockwork, and ideally a seasonal temperature variation. Whether V. polylepis would respond to such conditions is unknown. Honest expectation is that this species, like the majority of hillstream loaches, will not breed in captivity under typical keeping conditions, and the few individuals in the trade are wild-collected rather than captive-bred.

In the aquarium

Vanmanenia polylepis is a specialist fish that repays careful setup with its unusual biology and quietly active, grazing behaviour — but it is unforgiving of common beginner conditions. The single most important requirement is cool, fast, highly oxygenated water: the species originates in torrent streams where dissolved oxygen is always near saturation. Water temperature should be kept in the range of approximately 64–75 °F (65–75 °F); at the upper end of that range oxygen levels begin to drop and the fish becomes stressed. Temperatures above 75 °F are dangerous over time. Strong circulation — a powerhead or circulation pump delivering several tank-volumes per hour over a smooth rock surface — is not optional. A mature tank with an established biofilm on all rock and glass surfaces is equally essential: this fish will not thrive in a newly set-up aquarium or one that is kept scrubbed clean.

A tank of 20–25 US gal (approximately 80 x 15.5 in footprint) at minimum, furnished densely with smooth river stones, cobbles and flat slate arranged to create both exposed flow-facing surfaces for grazing and sheltered pockets for resting, suits the species well. Water parameters should be clean and stable: pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness. This species is peaceful toward other fish and can be kept in a group; it does not require the obligate shoaling of botiid loaches, but several individuals coexist without conflict and allow natural behaviour. Avoid housing it with active, competitive fish that will claim food before it can graze. Unlike botiid loaches, Vanmanenia does not carry an erectile suborbital spine, but the skin is thin and scale-covered; exercise the usual caution with medications — avoid copper-based treatments and use any medication at a conservative dose.

Conservation

Vanmanenia polylepis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated. Its range encompasses parts of Guangdong Province in southern China and portions of northern Vietnam and Laos — a region where freshwater habitats face ongoing pressure from agricultural runoff, hydropower dam construction, gravel extraction and water abstraction from smaller hill streams.

The species' dependence on clean, fast-flowing, cool, high-oxygen streams makes it inherently sensitive to any change in hydrology or water quality. Impoundment of tributaries, siltation from upland agriculture, and warming of stream temperatures from forest clearance are among the most relevant threats to hill-stream specialists across its range. No trade-level data exist for this species specifically; the few individuals that reach the aquarium trade are almost certainly wild-collected from their native streams. Given its specialist habitat requirements, localised distribution within each drainage, and the ongoing pressures on hill-stream habitats in southern China and mainland Southeast Asia, precaution in the hobby — preferring captive-sourced fish where available, and not purchasing fish whose origin is uncertain — is warranted.
