Taxonomy & naming
Vanmanenia pseudostriata was formally described by Zhu, Zhao, Liu and Niu in 2019, with the type locality given as the Zhangjiu-He stream, a tributary of the Jinsha-Jiang (the upper reach of the Chang-Jiang, or Yangtze River), in Luquan County, Yunnan Province, China. The species had been collected and misidentified prior to its description as V. pingchowensis, a widespread congener; the 2019 paper separated it as a distinct species.
Vanmanenia belongs to the family Balitoridae (hillstream loaches), also placed by some authors in Gastromyzontidae — the two treatments reflect ongoing flux in the higher classification of the torrent-loach lineages, but the genus assignment is stable. Within the genus, V. pseudostriata falls in the "barred group", defined by regular transverse bars on the flank, spotless paired fins, and three rostral lobes with a smooth arcuate outer edge. It is distinguished from the similar V. marmorata by its 9–10 regular bars (versus a vermiculated, irregular pattern), rounded rather than triangular rostral lobules, a higher lateral-line scale count of 95–100 (versus 78–90), and a more posterior anus position.
The epithet pseudostriata means "false-striped" — pseudo- from Greek for false, and striata from Latin for striped — almost certainly referring to the barred pattern that superficially resembles, but differs from, the striped pattern of other congeners.
Morphology
V. pseudostriata has the characteristic body plan of a hillstream balitorid: strongly dorsoventrally flattened, with a broad head, wide paired fins, and a ventrally flattened abdomen that functions as a suction surface for clinging to rock in torrential current. The body cross-section is closer to a disc than a cylinder — an adaptation for living where the water exerts powerful downstream force.
The flanks carry 9–10 distinct, regular dark bars — the feature that names the species and separates it from its closest relative, V. marmorata, which displays a vermiculated (worm-track) pattern instead of clear bars. The paired fins are spotless. The lateral-line scale count is 95–100. As with all balitorids, the skin is effectively scaleless to the touch, with scales deeply embedded; this matters for medication sensitivity. Like other loaches the suborbital spine is present, though in the hill-stream lineages it is typically less conspicuous than in the robust botiids.
Size data for this recently described species are sparse; the type specimens and congeners suggest a small adult length in the range typical for the genus, roughly 2–3 in total length, but this should be treated as provisional until more specimens are documented.
Habitat
The type locality is the Zhangjiu-He, a clear, fast-flowing mountain stream tributary of the Jinsha-Jiang in the upper Chang-Jiang drainage of Yunnan. Based on the cache data and the ecology of the genus, V. pseudostriata inhabits fast torrential streams with gravelly to pebbly substrate, surrounded by boulders and bedrock outcrops over which water flows rapidly. The water is cool, hard or moderately mineralized, and saturated with dissolved oxygen generated by the turbulence.
This is a rheophilic specialist — one whose entire body form is an answer to living in fast water — and the habitat requirements that follow are as strict as the body plan suggests. The species is not tolerant of warm, still, or poorly oxygenated conditions. The Yunnan highlands where it occurs experience cooler temperatures than the lowland tropics, and the streams are fed by snowmelt and montane rainfall. Broader records for Vanmanenia indicate a range across southern China, northern Vietnam, and Laos within the upper Mekong and Chang-Jiang systems.
Feeding
Like all hillstream balitorids, V. pseudostriata is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. In nature it rasps diatoms, algae, microorganisms, and organic detritus from the surface of rocks — the biofilm mat that coats submerged stone in well-lit, fast, nutrient-modest streams. Small invertebrates, midge larvae, and particulate organic matter ingested incidentally with the biofilm round out the diet.
This feeding mode is the key fact for any keeper: the fish is not a conventional algae eater that will work through a tank of green hair algae on command, nor a pellet-feeder that adapts readily to prepared foods alone. It requires a tank with a mature, well-developed biofilm on its rock surfaces — which takes weeks or months to establish — and supplementation with small frozen foods (daphnia, baby brine shrimp, cyclops), blanched greens (spinach, courgette, cucumber), and sinking specialist algae wafers. Placed in a bare, new, or recently bleach-cleaned tank, it will starve. The correct mental model is grazing livestock on pasture, not a fish eating from a bowl.
Mating
Nothing specific is recorded about mating behaviour in V. pseudostriata, and the species is not kept or bred in aquaria. In hillstream loaches generally, sexual dimorphism is subtle; females of related species are reportedly plumper-bodied when gravid, but the two sexes are otherwise difficult to distinguish externally. Some members of the wider hillstream loach group show slight differences in fin shape or in the development of tubercles on the snout in males during the breeding season, but whether V. pseudostriata shows any such feature is not documented.
Spawning in this group is tied to water temperature and flow — the cooler, higher-flow conditions of the montane dry season versus the slightly warmer, reduced-flow wet season may act as seasonal cues. In the genus Sewellia, which is better studied, pairs or groups spawn by pressing together on rock surfaces, releasing and fertilising small batches of eggs that lodge in crevices or among gravel. A similar mechanism is plausible for Vanmanenia, but this is extrapolation rather than observation.
Breeding
Vanmanenia pseudostriata is not bred in home aquaria, and there are no published records of aquarium spawning for this species. The broader Vanmanenia genus is rarely if ever spawned in captivity; the few hillstream loaches that have been bred in the hobby — notably some Sewellia lineolata — have done so only in mature, strongly-flowing river-biotope tanks with well-established biofilm growth, where the fish were in excellent condition over a long period.
For those species that do spawn, hillstream loaches are egg-scatterers with no parental care: eggs are deposited among stones or in fine substrate interstices in fast-flowing water, left to develop in the current, and the adults provide nothing further. Given the extremely recent description of V. pseudostriata, the difficulty of maintaining hillstream loaches in general, and the near-absence of the species from the trade, a keeper should not approach this fish expecting to breed it. Providing excellent conditions — cool, fast, oxygen-rich water over mature rock — is the goal; spawning, if it occurs, would be a bonus.
In the aquarium
Vanmanenia pseudostriata is not an aquarium fish in any practical commercial sense: it is essentially unknown in the trade, described only in 2019, and unlikely to appear for sale except through specialist importers of Chinese stream fish. Were it to become available, the requirements of the genus are clear and non-negotiable.
The tank must replicate the cool, turbulent, oxygen-saturated stream environment: strong flow from a powerhead or wave maker, excellent filtration, and temperature maintained at roughly 64–75 °F — critically cooler than a standard tropical tank. Warm water (above 79 °F) is harmful. The substrate should be smooth gravel or fine sand (the nearly scaleless belly is prone to abrasion), with a substantial rockscape of rounded river stones providing grazing surfaces. That rockscape must be mature — colonised with diatoms and biofilm — before the fish are introduced, and it must remain so; regular scraping or bleaching defeats the purpose. A tank of at least 40–55 US gal is appropriate to support the flow rate and swimming space needed.
Diet must include prepared biofilm/algae wafers, frequent offerings of small frozen foods, and blanched greens. The near-scaleless skin makes hillstream loaches sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many standard treatments; if medication is needed, half-dose treatments and observation are the rule. V. pseudostriata is a peaceful species within its own kind and unlikely to trouble tankmates, but it should not be combined with dominant or fast-swimming fish that will outcompete it for food.
Conservation
Vanmanenia pseudostriata has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation category. Its description in 2019 is recent enough that a formal assessment has not been completed; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE). Many stream-endemic loaches from Yunnan and the upper Chang-Jiang system share this status — their ranges are narrow and their populations poorly quantified, meaning that significant threats could exist without formal documentation.
The Jinsha-Jiang drainage, where V. pseudostriata was collected, has experienced significant hydrological change in recent decades from dam construction on the upper Yangtze and its tributaries. Fast-flowing, gravel-bedded hill-stream habitat is among the most vulnerable to impoundment, which converts torrent runs into slack reservoirs and alters both temperature and sediment regime. Whether V. pseudostriata faces immediate population pressure from such changes is not documented. The species has no known presence in the aquarium trade, so collection for that market is not a current concern. Given the narrow known range and specialist habitat, precautionary awareness of its conservation situation is warranted as survey data accumulate.
