Vanmanenia striata was described by Chen in 1980, placed in the genus Vanmanenia within the hillstream loach family Balitoridae. Its validity and authorship are confirmed by ITIS and the Catalog of Fishes lineage of records (Eschmeyer's catalog framework), and FishBase carries the same combination without noting a synonymy. As with much of the Cobitoidea, generic boundaries in this group have shifted repeatedly over recent decades, but nothing in the available record here indicates that Vanmanenia striata has ever been placed in a different genus — it has been consistently treated as a Vanmanenia species since its description.
The genus Vanmanenia is one of several hillstream-loach genera — alongside Sewellia, Gastromyzon and Balitora — that share the flattened, sucker-bodied plan typical of torrent-dwelling Balitoridae. As a hillstream specialist, Vanmanenia striata lives in cool, clear, highly oxygenated water running swiftly over stone and gravel substrate rather than in still or slow-moving habitats. Feeding
Hillstream loaches of this type are aufwuchs grazers: they rasp biofilm, diatoms and algae from the surface of rocks in flowing water using a sucker-like mouth adapted for the job. Because so little is documented about this particular species' temperament and social needs, a cautious keeper should provide generous rockwork, plenty of grazing surface, and avoid keeping it in anything but a well-established, high-flow, well-oxygenated aquarium sized to its roughly 4–4.5 in adult length.
