Taxonomy & naming
Vanmanenia tetraloba was described in 1978 by Mai Dinh Yen, the Vietnamese ichthyologist for whom the genus Vanmanenia is not named (the genus itself commemorates an earlier collector); it has stood in the genus Vanmanenia since. Vanmanenia sits in the family Balitoridae, the hillstream or torrent loaches, a group frequently reshuffled as the old catch-all genera of Cobitoidea have been split apart over recent decades.

Morphology
This is a true hillstream loach: a strongly flattened, depressed body plan that turns the fish's underside into an effective sucker against rock. In this habitat the fish spends its life clamped to rock surfaces in the fastest parts of the current, where oxygen is highest and the biofilm it feeds on grows thickest. It is a strict rheophile — a species that depends on flow itself, not merely tolerates it — and the genus as a whole shows high fidelity to this stream-and-torrent niche across its Chinese and Indochinese range.
Feeding
Vanmanenia tetraloba is an aufwuchs grazer, rasping biofilm, algae, diatoms and associated microfauna off rock surfaces in fast, clear water. In the wild this diet is broadly omnivorous at the microscopic scale: algae, phytoplankton, bacteria and fungi growing as a film on stone, along with incidental zooplankton.
This is not a fish that thrives on flake or an occasional algae wafer. It needs a mature tank with an established, algae- and biofilm-covered rockscape to graze continuously, supplemented with small frozen foods and blanched greens. Dropped into a bare or newly set-up tank with no biofilm to browse, a hillstream loach like this one will slowly starve even while accepting some prepared food — one of the most common and least obvious ways the group is lost in captivity.

Critically, the tank must be mature enough to carry a standing film of algae and biofilm on hardscape surfaces, since this is the fish's primary food source; a spotless, newly cycled tank is the wrong environment for it.
Being effectively scaleless, it is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength treatments generally, so any medicating should be done cautiously and at reduced dose where possible. Its flattened, sucker-bodied build makes it a poor swimmer in open water and a poor companion for boisterous fish that might crowd it off rockwork; calmer current-loving tankmates suit it best. Size a tank to its roughly 4 in adult length with generous rock surface area for grazing territory, not just swimming room.
