Taxonomy & naming
Yaoshania pachychilus was described by Chen in 1980 and has at times been placed in the genus Protomyzon before being recognised as the sole member of its own genus, Yaoshania. The genus name honours the Dayao Mountains (Dayaoshan) of Guangxi, the species' home range, and it sits in the family Balitoridae — the true hillstream or torrent loaches — within the broader superfamily Cobitoidea that also holds the botiid, cobitid and nemacheilid loaches.
The reshuffling of Old-World loach genera has been especially active in this group over the past few decades, with numerous species moved between Protomyzon, Beaufortia, Vanmanenia and other gastromyzontid genera as revisions have sharpened. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the currently accepted combination, and as of this writing that combination remains Yaoshania pachychilus.
Morphology
This is a true hillstream loach: a small, strongly dorsoventrally flattened fish whose flattened underside and paired fins form a functional sucker, letting it cling to smooth rock faces in torrents that would sweep an ordinary fish downstream. The head is broad and the body tapers to a slim caudal peduncle, an architecture shared across the gastromyzontid loaches and built entirely around holding station in current rather than free swimming.
Maximum reported length is modest — around 2.5 in standard length (roughly 2–2.5 in in most accounts) — making it one of the smaller hillstream species in the hobby. Juveniles carry a striking black-and-white banded or blotched pattern, the source of the "panda loach" trade name; adults tone down to a comparatively plain brownish coloration as they mature. Like other balitorid loaches it is essentially scaleless in appearance, with fine, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin sensitive to medication and water-quality decline.
Habitat
The panda loach is endemic to Jinxiu County in Guangxi Province, southern China, where it lives in the fast, clear hill streams of the Dayaoshan range above roughly 1640 ft altitude. These are cool, crystal-clear, highly oxygenated torrents running over bedrock, boulders and stones, with a turnover rate that field and aquarium accounts alike describe as extreme — on the order of 10-20 times the water volume per hour — and only sparse aquatic vegetation.
This is a cool-water, high-flow specialist, not a warm, still-water tropical fish. Reported temperatures run roughly 59–77 °F, and the species is described as tolerating natural seasonal fluctuation in its home streams, with pH in the mildly acidic-to-neutral 6.5-7.5 range. Recreating that combination of cool temperature, powerful flow and maximal oxygen saturation is the central habitat challenge in keeping it, and a warm, low-flow, poorly oxygenated tank is the fastest way to lose this fish.
Feeding
Yaoshania pachychilus is an aufwuchs grazer, rasping biofilm, diatoms and soft algae from the surface of stones in clear, fast-flowing water. In the wild this film of microorganisms and algae is its primary food source, and its whole feeding strategy depends on a mature, established rock surface rather than on food delivered directly to it.
In the aquarium it will take dry and frozen foods, but its core diet needs to remain biofilm and soft algae — sources recommend against excessive protein or heavy feeding. The single biggest feeding failure with this species is placing it in a newly set-up or scrubbed-clean tank with no algae or biofilm layer for it to graze: without that mature grazing surface it slowly starves, regardless of what is dropped in at feeding time.
Mating
Little is documented about courtship or sex differences in this species; no reliable external dimorphism has been described in the sources available, and data on pairing behaviour is sparse. What is reported is a plausible environmental trigger: breeding activity is thought to be associated with a drop in water temperature toward around 59 °F, consistent with the seasonal cooling this species would experience in its mountain-stream habitat.
Given how little is recorded, keepers should treat any observed courtship as noteworthy and not assume the species behaves like better-studied hillstream or botiid loaches; the honest position is that its reproductive behaviour in the wild and in captivity is still poorly known.
Breeding
Breeding is only lightly documented for the panda loach. What is recorded points to it being an egg-scatterer in the general hillstream-loach pattern: eggs are reportedly laid under stones, with no parental care described, and spawning may be cued by a seasonal temperature drop rather than occurring on demand. As with the great majority of hillstream loaches other than the well-known Sewellia lineolata, verified home-aquarium spawnings of Yaoshania pachychilus are not well documented in available sources.
Keepers should not expect to breed this species reliably. The honest picture is that most individuals in the trade are wild-collected from its narrow native range in Guangxi rather than captive-bred, and anyone attempting to spawn it is working from very limited precedent — a mature, high-flow, cool-running biotope tank with a strong seasonal temperature cycle is the closest approximation to what little is known of its natural trigger.
In the aquarium
This is a moderate-to-advanced species built around one requirement: cool, fast, maximally oxygenated water. Sources describe turnover on the order of 10-20 times the tank volume per hour, achieved with powerheads or a strong filter return rather than standard aquarium flow, plus a rocky substrate of stones and boulders that is allowed to grow a biofilm and light algae layer — scrubbing the tank clean removes its food supply. It is a schooling species and does best kept in a group of four or more, and a tank of 20 US gallons (roughly 20 US gal) or more is recommended even for a small group given the flow and oxygenation demands.
Water quality has to stay consistently high: this is a sensitive species that responds poorly to quality decline and needs regular maintenance rather than a "set and forget" approach. Keep temperature toward the cool end of its 59–77 °F range rather than treating it as a standard tropical community fish, and avoid pairing it with warm-water tankmates that would force a compromise on temperature. Being a near-scaleless loach in the broader balitorid mould, caution with medications and copper-based treatments is prudent even though specific sensitivity data for this species is limited.
Conservation
Yaoshania pachychilus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. Even so, it is a narrow-range endemic, restricted to mountain streams in and around Jinxiu County in the Dayaoshan range of Guangxi, China — the kind of small, specific distribution that leaves a species exposed to any single localised pressure such as stream damming, water diversion or pollution, even under a currently favourable overall assessment.
The species entered the aquarium trade relatively recently, becoming more widely available from the 2010s onward as the panda loach. Available sources do not document an established captive-breeding supply chain, which points to at least a meaningful portion of trade stock being wild-collected from its limited native range — a point worth keeping in mind when sourcing this fish, even absent a documented population decline.
