Acnodon oligacanthus was described by the German naturalists Johannes Müller and Franz Hermann Troschel in 1844, part of the wave of Amazonian and Guianan fish descriptions that followed the great nineteenth-century European collecting expeditions to South America. It sits in the family Serrasalmidae — piranhas, pacus and silver dollars — within the order Characiformes, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Acnodon as a small genus of pacu-type serrasalmids distinguished from the true piranhas (Pygocentrus, Serrasalmus) by their blunt, molariform dentition adapted to grazing rather than cutting flesh.
Serrasalmidae taxonomy has been reworked substantially over the past two decades, with several silver-dollar and pacu lineages reshuffled among genera as more material and molecular data have become available; Acnodon has remained a stable, comparatively small genus through those revisions. GBIF and FishBase both confirm the current combination Acnodon oligacanthus (Müller & Troschel, 1844) as valid, and no common trade name has become firmly attached to the species — it is generally sold, when available at all, simply as a silver dollar or pacu.
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, Acnodon oligacanthus has the classic silver-dollar body plan: a deep, laterally compressed, disc-shaped outline with a small head and a mouth set for grazing rather than predation. FishBase records a maximum published size of 8 in total length, making it a modestly sized serrasalmid well within the range that a large home aquarium can accommodate as an adult. The body is countershaded silver, typical of open-water and mid-water Amazonian and Guianan characins that rely on a mirror-flash to disappear against dappled light.

Adults are more solitary and shift into the main river channels, where they associate with aquatic vegetation. Detailed pH and temperature figures have not been published for this species specifically; keepers and researchers alike are best served by treating it as a soft-water, warm-tropical Guiana Shield fish rather than assuming extreme blackwater conditions without direct evidence.
Feeding

This is a classic pacu-type diet, built around vegetation and plant-derived material rather than fish or significant amounts of animal protein.
In the aquarium this translates directly: offer blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), spirulina-based flake or pellet, algae wafers and occasional fruit, and expect the fish to treat any live plants in the tank as a menu item rather than décor. Keepers of the closely related Acnodon normani are advised against any live vegetation for the same reason, and that guidance applies equally here. Provide a robust, hard-scaped setup instead — driftwood, rock and hardy, unpalatable plants if any — sized generously for an active, disc-bodied schooling fish.
Water parameters are best kept soft and mildly acidic to circumneutral, warm-tropical, with strong filtration and good aeration to match the well-oxygenated creek and river habitats it comes from in the wild; specific temperature and pH figures have not been published for this species, so keepers should err toward the gentle, soft-water end of typical Guiana Shield conditions rather than guessing at extremes. As a peaceful schooler it does best in a group rather than alone, and it is a poor match for aggressive or fin-nipping tankmates given its own placid, grazing temperament. It is also a genuinely uncommon fish in the trade — most keepers encountering a silver dollar at retail are seeing a different, more widely available Serrasalmidae species, not this one.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Acnodon oligacanthus as Least Concern on 2 January 2021, with no specific threat data identified in that assessment. This reflects a fish that, while narrowly restricted to North Guiana Shield drainages, is not known to face significant pressure from fishing, habitat loss or the aquarium trade — it is essentially absent from the ornamental fish trade, which removes one common source of collection pressure entirely for this species.
The wider North Guiana Shield region remains comparatively intact relative to more heavily developed parts of the Amazon basin, though mining, deforestation and infrastructure development are long-term watch items across Guianan freshwater systems generally. No population trend or targeted conservation programme specific to this species is documented in the available sources.
