Piranhas & Pacus · names

Every name, resolved

Each fish carries a current scientific binomial under the Catalog of Fishes and, usually, an English common name — “red-bellied piranha”, “tambaqui”, “silver dollar”, “payara”, “wolf fish”, “headstander”. Serrasalmidae is being split hard — the silver-dollar and pacu genera (Myloplus, Myleus, Colossoma, Piaractus) have shifted repeatedly — so the same fish often travels under more than one name. This index cross-references both layers — the 871 scientific names and 616 common names — and resolves each one to its species page.

Scientific name — the valid binomial under the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names. Common name — English vernacular and trade names recorded for the species. Each entry is tagged with its group. Many little-known stream characins have no English name at all and appear by their binomial only.
