Taxonomy & naming
Anostomoides atrianalis was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1909. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, and to the small genus Anostomoides, which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as distinct from the larger and more commonly traded headstander genera Leporinus and Anostomus.
The genus name Anostomoides itself signals the family relationship: it is built on Anostomus, the genus that gives Anostomidae its name, with a suffix indicating resemblance — "like Anostomus." The species epithet atrianalis is a Latin compound referring to the dark (atra) marking on the anal (analis) region, a feature consistent with the family's frequent use of body and fin markings as diagnostic characters. As with many characins in this family, careful comparison against related Anostomoides and Leporinus species is needed for confident field identification.
The name Anostomoides laticeps (Eigenmann, 1912) has also been used for this fish: a taxonomic revision of the genus by Assega & Birindelli, published in Zootaxa in 2019, examined the type material of both names and found them to represent a single species, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now treats Anostomoides laticeps as a junior synonym of the earlier-described Anostomoides atrianalis. That same revision recognised the genus as containing two valid species overall — A. atrianalis and A. nattereri (a former Leporinus species, itself absorbing the name A. passionis) — so Anostomoides is not the monotypic genus that older, pre-2019 sources sometimes describe.
Morphology
Anostomoides atrianalis has the characteristic headstander body plan: an elongated, moderately compressed body and a pointed, upturned snout adapted for grazing at an angle rather than feeding straight ahead. FishBase records a maximum of 6 in standard length directly under the atrianalis combination, but specimens catalogued under the now-synonymised name Anostomoides laticeps reach a documented 12 in SL — since the two names refer to the same species, the true maximum size for A. atrianalis is better represented by the larger figure, and this species should not be assumed to stay as small as the 6 in record alone would suggest. Even at the larger figure it remains more modest than the biggest Leporinus species, some of which exceed 12 in.
The lectotype, held at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle (MNHN-IC 1887-0761) and measuring 6.5 in SL, was collected from the Río Orinoco in Venezuela during the 1885–1886 expedition period. Detailed published descriptions of live colouration are sparse in the readily available literature; as in related Anostomoides and Leporinus species, colour pattern and any dark anal-region marking referenced by the species name are likely to be most pronounced in healthy, well-conditioned individuals.
Habitat
Anostomoides atrianalis has a broad South American distribution spanning the Río Orinoco basin in Venezuela, the Essequibo River basin in Guyana, and parts of the Amazon basin — including the Madeira, Negro, Tocantins and Xingu rivers — across Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Peru. The type locality is the Orinoco in Venezuela.
Detailed site-specific water chemistry data for this species is not confirmed in the sources reviewed here, but headstanders in this family are typically found grazing over submerged wood, rock and leaf litter in flowing to moderately flowing tropical river habitat. Related genera in the family favour warm, slightly acidic to neutral water, and it is reasonable to expect similar broad tolerances in A. atrianalis given its wide range across both Orinoco and Amazon drainages, though this should be treated as inference from relatives rather than a confirmed data point for the species itself.
Feeding
Anostomoides atrianalis is a grazer — an aufwuchs feeder that picks algae, biofilm and small invertebrates from submerged surfaces while oriented head-down, a posture that gives the whole family its common name. This head-down grazing behaviour is well documented across Anostomidae and is consistent with the genus's specialised, angled mouth.
Related genera in the family, including Anostomus, are primarily herbivorous omnivores whose diet in the wild is dominated by algae and biofilm with some incidental invertebrate material. In the aquarium, related headstanders are fed a diet built around algae wafers, spirulina and vegetable matter, supplemented with occasional frozen or live protein — a feeding approach reasonable to extend to A. atrianalis in the absence of species-specific dietary studies.
Mating
Species-specific courtship behaviour for Anostomoides atrianalis is not documented in the sources reviewed here. Across Anostomidae generally, spawning is associated with a pair separating toward open water or the surface rather than defending a fixed nest site, but detailed courtship descriptions specific to this species are not available.
External sexual dimorphism for A. atrianalis is not confirmed in the available literature; data is sparse enough that no reliable claim can be made about sex differences in body shape, size or colouration for this species.
Breeding
Headstanders in Anostomidae are, as a family, egg-scatterers with no parental care: a pair moves toward open water or the surface and releases and fertilises eggs that then disperse rather than being guarded at a nest. This mode is documented for related genera in the family, and some Leporinus species are farmed commercially in South America and Asia for the food and ornamental trades, but breeding within the aquarium remains rare across the family as a whole.
Anostomoides atrianalis itself has no confirmed aquarium or captive-breeding reports in the sources reviewed here. Given its close relationship to other Anostomidae, an egg-scattering mode with no parental care is the most reasonable inference, but this should be understood as inference from the family rather than a direct observation of this species, and prospective breeders should expect it to be a difficult, rarely achieved undertaking.
In the aquarium
Anostomoides atrianalis is a mid-sized headstander — 6 in SL is the figure documented directly under this name, but specimens recorded under its synonym, Anostomoides laticeps, reach 12 in SL, and a keeper should plan tank space around the larger figure rather than assume the fish will stay small. It should be housed in a tank large enough to accommodate an active, grazing, mid-to-large characin — plenty of open swimming space plus driftwood, rock and other grazing surfaces for it to work over in its head-down feeding posture. Strong filtration and a moderate current, reflecting its river habitat, are appropriate.
As with its relatives in Leporinus and Anostomus, keepers should be alert to the family's well-earned reputation for territoriality and fin-nipping, particularly as fish mature; a single specimen or a carefully chosen, spacious community is generally safer than assuming placid nano-community behaviour. Because it grazes on soft, fine-leaved vegetation as part of a herbivore-leaning diet, hardy or unpalatable plants are a safer choice than delicate species in a planted setup. Vegetable-forward foods — algae wafers, spirulina, blanched vegetables — should form the base of the diet, supplemented with occasional protein.
Conservation
Anostomoides atrianalis is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, an assessment from 2022 that reflects the absence of documented major threats and a stable status across its wide range spanning the Orinoco, Essequibo and Amazon basins.
Its broad distribution across multiple major South American drainages — spanning Venezuela, Guyana, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Peru — gives it a wider buffer against localised pressures than many single-river characins, though the general threats facing Amazonian and Orinoco freshwater fish more broadly, including damming and deforestation-linked habitat change, remain long-term watch items for the region even where the species itself is not currently considered at risk.
