Argonectes longiceps was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1858. It is placed in the family Hemiodontidae, a group of mid-water and benthopelagic characins closely related to the pencilfishes and to Hemiodus itself, within the broader characin diversity that also contains the piranhas and pacus covered elsewhere in this atlas. The genus Argonectes is small, currently recognised as holding two valid species, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the reference point for that placement.
Argonectes longiceps is easy to overlook next to its showier relatives: it lacks the deep body and dramatic dentition of a piranha or the bulk of a pacu, and published biological data on the species remain sparse. Most of what is documented comes from museum and survey records (FishBase) and from the occasional aquarium-trade description, rather than from targeted field studies.
Morphology
Argonectes longiceps has an elongated, streamlined, laterally compressed body typical of open-water and current-dwelling characins, with silvery flanks and a distinctive black-and-white banded tail pattern that is one of its few conspicuous field marks. The mouth is small and subterminal, suited to picking food items from the substrate rather than seizing prey, and the head is proportionally elongate relative to Hemiodus, consistent with the genus name ("long-headed" fish).
A key distinguishing trait from its better-known relative Hemiodus is posture: where Hemiodus species characteristically swim with the head tilted upward, Argonectes longiceps swims level and horizontal in the water column. Habitat
Argonectes longiceps is native to South America, recorded from the Amazon basin (the Japurá, Negro, Trombetas, Tapajós and Canumã river systems) and from the Orinoco basin including the Maroni. It is a benthopelagic species associated with swift-flowing water over sandy substrate — clear- to blackwater river channels rather than still floodplain lakes or heavily vegetated backwaters.

A recommended stocking guideline of roughly 55 US gallons (around 55 US gal) reflects its modest-but-real adult size of up to 10 in SL — this is not a small nano-tank fish, and space should be sized to the mature animal, not the juvenile import.
Because it forages along the bottom in swift water in the wild, a setup with a sandy substrate, decent current and open swimming space suits it better than a densely planted, still-water aquarium. It readily accepts frozen and dry foods once settled. The species is uncommon in the trade — noted as imported from Colombia — and prospective keepers should expect wild-collected stock rather than farmed fish, with correspondingly limited husbandry information to draw on.
