Taxonomy & naming
Chilodus zunevei was described by the French ichthyologist Jean Puyo in 1946, and it remains a valid species within the small genus Chilodus, family Chilodontidae, order Characiformes. The genus currently holds only a handful of recognised species, most of which look broadly similar — a laterally compressed, oval body with a small, underslung mouth adapted for grazing — and are separated largely on the presence or absence of a dark longitudinal stripe and on subtle differences in scale counts and colour pattern. Chilodus zunevei is notable within the genus as one of the species that never develops a longitudinal band along the flank, distinguishing it from the more familiar, aquarium-trade spotted headstander, Chilodus punctatus.
The type locality lies in the Kaw River basin of French Guiana, and the type specimen is held under catalogue number MHNG 2608.040. The species name honours no obvious eponym recorded in the readily available literature, and the genus name Chilodus derives from Greek roots referring to the lip and tooth structure that gives the fish its distinctive, angled grazing mouth. Chilodontidae itself sits within the broader headstander and pencilfish lineage of Characiformes, a group distinct from the true anostomid headstanders (Leporinus, Anostomus) with which it shares only a common name and posture, not a family.
Morphology
Chilodus zunevei is a small, deep-bodied, laterally compressed fish reaching a documented maximum of roughly 3 in, making it one of the smallest members of its genus — other Chilodus species commonly reach 3–4 in. The body carries the family's signature small, obliquely angled mouth, positioned to graze surfaces from below and slightly ahead of the fish rather than to snap at prey in open water. As with other Chilodus, males typically develop somewhat extended dorsal-fin rays compared to females, one of the few external cues available for sexing the species.
What sets Chilodus zunevei apart within its own genus is pattern rather than shape: it is one of only two Chilodus species that never show a longitudinal dark band running along the body, a feature that is prominent and diagnostic in its better-known relative Chilodus punctatus. Beyond that absence of banding, detailed published colour description is sparse, and much of the fine morphological detail available for the genus is drawn from the more thoroughly documented C. punctatus rather than from species-specific studies of C. zunevei.
Habitat
Chilodus zunevei is native to the Guianas and the adjacent margin of Brazil, with a range centred on the coastal river systems of French Guiana and northeastern Suriname. Records place it in the Kaw, Maroni, Mana, Iracoubo, Sinnamary, Kourou, Approuague and Oyapock river systems of French Guiana, extending along the Suriname coast and into the Rio Amapá drainage on the Brazilian side of the Oyapock border. This is a fish of blackwater-influenced Guiana Shield rivers and their tributaries rather than of the main Amazon channel itself.
Within its genus, Chilodus species are found over submerged wood, leaf litter and root tangles in slow-flowing to still water, where the fish grazes surfaces for algae and biofilm rather than actively hunting through the water column. Published water-chemistry data specific to C. zunevei is limited, but congeners in the genus are documented to tolerate a wide range spanning roughly 68–82 °F and pH 5.0-7.5, consistent with the soft, often tannin-stained waters typical of the Guiana Shield.
Feeding
Chilodus zunevei is a grazer, or aufwuchs feeder, spending much of its time in the characteristic head-down posture that gives headstanders their name while it picks algae and biofilm from wood, leaves and other submerged surfaces. Stomach-content work on the genus documents a diet in the wild that includes insects and insect larvae, terrestrial fruits taken from the flooded margins, and algae, alongside occasional scale-grazing on other fish — a trait shared, in varying degrees, across several Chilodontidae and anostomid genera.
In the aquarium, Chilodus species take a vegetable-forward diet readily: blanched vegetables such as cucumber, lettuce and spinach, Spirulina-based sinking pellets or wafers, and occasional frozen protein foods such as Daphnia or bloodworm. A diet skewed too heavily toward protein and away from vegetable matter is not recommended for this grazing lineage; a wide mix that leans on greens and algae-based foods more closely matches what the fish forages for in the wild.
Mating
Detailed courtship description specific to Chilodus zunevei has not been documented in the readily available literature. Across the genus, spawning is associated with the onset of the wet season, when rising water levels and softer, more acidic conditions appear to trigger reproductive activity; this is consistent with the seasonal flood-pulse spawning pattern common to many Guiana Shield and Amazonian characins. Males of the genus typically show somewhat longer dorsal-fin rays than females, which may play a role in courtship display, though this has not been studied in depth for C. zunevei specifically.
Breeding
Chilodus zunevei is presumed, on the basis of its genus, to be a free-spawning egg-scatterer rather than a nest-builder or mouthbrooder: the female scatters eggs over fine-leaved plants or similar cover with no parental care given to eggs or fry afterward. This matches the documented breeding mode of the better-studied congener Chilodus punctatus, which spawns at the onset of the wet season with no guarding behaviour observed.
Breeding reports for Chilodus zunevei specifically are essentially absent from the hobby and scientific literature — this is not a species regularly bred in captivity, and most of what can be said about its reproduction is inferred from its genus rather than observed directly in this species. Prospective breeders should treat any attempt as exploratory rather than following an established protocol.
In the aquarium
At under 3 in, Chilodus zunevei stays genuinely small and is a realistic occupant of a modest, well-planted aquarium, unlike the much larger and often territorial Leporinus and Anostomus species that also carry the "headstander" name. It should be kept in a proper school — congeners in the genus are documented to squabble and become notably more aggressive toward one another when kept in small numbers, so a group of ten or more is the safer target rather than a pair or trio. Provide driftwood, leaf litter and fine-leaved or algae-tolerant plants for the fish to graze, along with gentle to moderate flow and soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral water in the rough range of 68–82 °F and pH 5.0-7.5.
Compared with its nippier anostomid relatives, Chilodus zunevei is considered a gentler, better-behaved nano-grazer, though it will still browse algae off plant leaves and can rasp at soft-leaved species over time, so hardier or fast-growing plants are a safer choice than delicate ones. Because it is essentially unstudied in the hobby beyond its genus-level traits, keepers should expect to fill in gaps with observation rather than an established, widely repeated care template, and should not expect to source wild-collected specimens easily given how narrow and remote its native range is.
Conservation
Chilodus zunevei has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status — it is Not Evaluated. Its range is narrow and specific: the coastal river systems of French Guiana and northeastern Suriname, with a marginal extension into the Rio Amapá of Brazil, none of which carry the intensive fishing or aquarium-collection pressure documented for larger, more widely ranged Serrasalmidae.
As with many small, single-region Guiana Shield fish, the absence of a formal assessment reflects a lack of targeted survey and monitoring effort rather than any specific evidence of decline. The Guiana Shield rivers it inhabits face the general pressures common to South American freshwater systems — small-scale gold mining, deforestation and associated water-quality change — which are relevant long-term watch items for the region's fish fauna even though no species-specific data exists for Chilodus zunevei itself.
