Ctenolucius beani is a slender, torpedo-shaped pike characin from the Pacific-slope rivers of Colombia and Panama, a close relative of the more familiar hujeta (Ctenolucius hujeta) and, like it, built for a single job: lying motionless near the surface until a smaller fish strays too close, then closing the gap in a burst of speed. It reaches a modest maximum of about 11.5 in, small by the standards of its predatory relatives, but it shares the family's defining weaknesses — thin, easily damaged skin and a long, fragile snout that splits against glass or hard decor if the fish panics. This is a fish for a keeper who wants a genuine river predator on display, not a community centerpiece, and who is prepared to build the tank around its size and its nerves rather than the other way around.

Taxonomy & naming

Ctenolucius beani was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1907, originally placed in the now-defunct genus Belonocharax as Belonocharax beani, before later authors recognised it as congeneric with Ctenolucius hujeta and moved it into Ctenolucius. It belongs to the small family Ctenoluciidae — the pike characins — a family of elongate, predatory Neotropical characiforms that also includes the genus Boulengerella from the Amazon and Orinoco basins. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Ctenolucius as holding just two valid species, C. beani and C. hujeta, distinguished largely by meristic detail and geography rather than by any dramatic difference in body plan.

The species epithet honours Barton Appler Bean, an assistant curator at the United States National Museum in Fowler's era, a common practice in early-twentieth-century American ichthyology of naming new species after colleagues and collectors. Because C. beani and C. hujeta are so similar in general appearance, aquarium literature and the trade frequently conflate the two or use "Ctenolucius" generically for whichever pike characin is in stock; care information for the genus is often written around C. hujeta specifically, and this account follows that pattern where species-specific data for C. beani is not available.

Morphology

Ctenolucius beani has the unmistakable pike-characin body plan: an extremely elongate, laterally compressed, torpedo-shaped body with the dorsal, anal and caudal fins set far back toward the tail, giving the fish a look that converges strongly on true pikes (Esox) despite the two groups being unrelated. The head is long and pointed, tapering into an elongated lower jaw studded with small, sharp teeth built for gripping rather than shearing prey. FishBase records a maximum length of 11.5 in standard length for the species, modest for a pike characin but still a substantial, fast-moving fish that needs open swimming room.

Colouration is countershaded and cryptic rather than showy: a silvery-olive to golden flank, a darker olive-brown back, and a fine dark lateral stripe running from eye to tail that is typical of the genus and helps break up the fish's outline against surface glare and riverbank debris. Like its relatives, the skin and scales are notably delicate for the fish's size, and the long snout is a genuine structural weak point — a defining vulnerability of the whole family rather than an occasional injury.

Habitat

The species is native to Pacific-slope drainages of northwestern Colombia and adjacent Panama, most notably the Río Atrato and Río San Juan basins, with the type locality given as Truando in the Río Atrato system. This is a comparatively narrow, single-region range by Neotropical characin standards, restricted to Pacific-draining rivers rather than the vast Amazon-Orinoco system that hosts most of the family's other predatory characins.

Feeding

In the aquarium

Ctenolucius beani is not a beginner or community fish. Genus-level care guidance calls for a tank of at least 180 × 23.5 in footprint with a minimum depth of about 12 in to give this streamlined, fast-swimming predator the length of open water it needs — a tank that is too short leaves it with nowhere to build up speed or turn, and a startled fish will bolt in a straight line into the glass. The skin is genuinely fragile and the long snout splits easily on impact, which is the species' single most consistent failure mode in captivity; a calm environment, secure lid, and a location away from sudden movement or vibration all matter more for this fish than for most community characins.

Water should be kept warm, in the tropical 72–82 °F range, with a soft, slightly acidic to neutral pH of roughly 5.5–7.0. Strong filtration and generous weekly water changes (commonly cited at 30–50%) are needed to keep pace with a predatory fish's waste load. Tankmates must be too large to be swallowed and ideally similarly fast-moving and surface-oriented so the pike characin does not view them as prey; overall care difficulty is best described as moderate to advanced, and this is not a fish for a newly cycled or lightly filtered tank.

Conservation

Ctenolucius beani is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, based on a 2020 assessment. The species' range is narrower than many of its Amazon-basin relatives, restricted to Pacific-slope drainages of Colombia and Panama, but there is no indication in the sources reviewed here of significant population decline or targeted conservation concern. As with many regionally endemic Neotropical characins, ongoing habitat pressures common to Pacific-slope Colombian and Central American rivers — deforestation, water-quality change and development — are long-term watch items for the basin as a whole even though the species itself is not currently classified as threatened.
