Dundocharax bidentatus is a tiny, little-known African characin — the sole species in its genus — described by Max Poll in 1967 from the Lucoge River, a tributary of the Chicapa in Angola's Kasai drainage. At a maximum recorded length of just 0.5 in standard length (about 1 in total length), it is one of the smallest characins in the family Distichodontidae, a family better known for the much larger, plant-shredding Distichodus. Taxonomy & naming

Dundocharax bidentatus was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1967 and remains the only recognised species in the monotypic genus Dundocharax. It sits in the family Distichodontidae, the African group of characins that also contains the much larger and far better-known Distichodus, within the order Characiformes.

Available records treat the genus as monotypic and the placement in Distichodontidae as settled, but very little taxonomic revision work has touched this species since its description — there is no evidence in the available sources of a later generic transfer or synonymy, so "Dundocharax bidentatus" is used here as the current valid combination.
