Gnathocharax steindachneri was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1913. It is the only species in its genus, Gnathocharax, placed within the characiform family Acestrorhynchidae alongside the pike characins (Acestrorhynchus) — a lineage of slender, predatory, big-jawed South American fishes. The genus name comes from Greek gnathos, "jaw", and charax, a term used across many characiform genus names for a spined or armoured fish; the species epithet honours the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner, a major nineteenth-century describer of Neotropical fishes.
Data on this species is comparatively sparse next to its more famous relatives (the large predatory Acestrorhynchus pike characins and the payara, Hydrolycus), reflecting its small size, restricted trade presence and the general under-study of minor characiform genera.
