Hoplerythrinus gronovii was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1847, with the type locality given as Cayenne, French Guiana. It belongs to the family Erythrinidae — the trahiras or wolf fish — within the order Characiformes, a small family of predatory Neotropical characins that also includes Hoplias and Erythrinus. The genus Hoplerythrinus is distinguished from Hoplias by a more slender body and from Erythrinus by dentition and other technical characters; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for the valid name and synonymy.
Hoplerythrinus gronovii is one of a small number of species in the genus and is far less frequently discussed in the literature or the hobby than the widespread H. unitaeniatus, which shares its basic body plan and air-breathing physiology. It should be kept alone, not in a group, and housed only with tankmates too large to be swallowed; smaller or slower fish will simply be eaten. Even at a modest maximum size of around 7 in SL, the heavy conical teeth and ambush strike of this genus make it a specialist's fish, not a community tankmate.
Because it is an obligate air breather, the aquarium needs unobstructed, calm access to the surface — tight-fitting covers and heavy surface agitation should be avoided, and the fish should be given room to rise and gulp air without being crowded by decor or other fish. Dense cover (roots, wood, plants) to provide an ambush point suits its natural behaviour, and as with all air-breathing predatory characins, a secure, gap-free lid is essential, since these fish are capable jumpers.
Conservation
Hoplerythrinus gronovii has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so no formal conservation status is currently assigned to the species. It is not a significant target of the aquarium trade, appearing only occasionally and in small numbers compared with the more commonly traded H. unitaeniatus, which limits collection pressure specific to this species.
