Taxonomy & naming

Lignobrycon myersi was originally described in 1956 by the Brazilian ichthyologist Paulo de Miranda Ribeiro as Moojenichthys myersi. It was later placed in the monotypic genus Lignobrycon, and it remains the only recognised species in that genus, within the family Triportheidae (the keeled hatchet-characins and their relatives) in the order Characiformes. The species epithet honours the American ichthyologist Dr. George Sprague Myers (1905–1985), a major figure in the study of Neotropical freshwater fishes.
