Taxonomy & naming
Lonchogenys ilisha was described by the American ichthyologist George S. Myers in 1927. It belongs to the family Acestrorhynchidae — the pike characins, which also contains the well-known payara genus Hydrolycus and the widespread genus Acestrorhynchus — within the order Characiformes. The genus Lonchogenys is a small one, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the currently valid combination Lonchogenys ilisha.
As with many of the smaller, less-studied pike characins, taxonomic literature on this species is sparse, and the cached sources here (FishBase, IUCN, and several hobbyist/trade references) are the extent of what could be verified; no additional synonymy or revision history is available to report with confidence.
Morphology
Lonchogenys ilisha shows the classic pike-characin build in miniature: an elongated, laterally compressed body built for a quick lunging strike, and a pointed, underslung lower jaw lined with sharp teeth adapted for seizing prey rather than crushing it. FishBase records a maximum length of 3 in, and hobby sources report adults closer to 2.5–3 in — a genuinely small member of a family whose better-known genera (Hydrolycus, the payaras) can reach nearly a metre.
Colouration is reported as understated but distinctive: males are described as developing a golden body tone with an orange-tinted tail, a pattern consistent with the subtle, silvery-to-gold colouring typical of smaller Acestrorhynchidae. Like its relatives, the species has thin, easily damaged skin and scales, a trait shared across the pike-characin family and a major reason these fish are considered fragile in captivity.
Habitat
The species is native to the Rio Negro basin, spanning Brazil and Colombia, part of the wider Amazon drainage. It is recorded as a benthopelagic freshwater fish, occupying the water column above the bottom rather than living on the substrate, consistent with an ambush-and-pursuit hunting style in open or lightly structured water.
Cached water-parameter data give a temperature range of roughly 72–79 °F, placing it in typical warm tropical Amazonian conditions; specific pH and hardness figures were not captured in the available sources, so this account does not assert them rather than guess. The Rio Negro is a well-known blackwater system, but without a direct citation for this species' preferred chemistry, that should be treated as a plausible regional inference rather than a documented fact for L. ilisha specifically.
Feeding
Lonchogenys ilisha is a carnivorous, predatory hunter. Trade and care sources describe the wider group of predatory characins it belongs to as opportunistic stalk hunters of small animals, and this species is reported as accepting only live or meaty foods — it does not take freeze-dried or flake food. In practice this means a diet of small fish, invertebrates and meaty prey items sized appropriately for an 3 in predator.
Any tankmates must be too large to be seen as prey, and, as with most pike characins, feeding needs to account for a fish that hunts by sight and lunge rather than by grazing or scavenging.
Mating

One cached reference notes only that the species is reported to spawn on exposed substrate in the wild, without further detail on pairing, triggers, or timing. Prospective keepers should not expect to breed this species and should treat any wild-caught or trade specimens as effectively unbreedable in captivity based on current knowledge.
In the aquarium
Lonchogenys ilisha is rare in the aquarium trade and is recommended only for experienced, informed keepers. Its small adult size (around 2.5–3 in) makes it far more tractable than its giant relatives the payaras, but it inherits the family's fragility: thin skin and scales that are easily damaged by rough handling, tight nets, or collisions with tank décor or glass, and a nervous disposition typical of pursuit predators kept in confined space.
Care sources recommend at least 80 US gal for a small group of three specimens of this general predatory-characin type, with tankmates limited to fish of comparable or larger size that will not be seen as food. It is described as peaceful toward conspecifics and similarly sized fish, but it is strictly carnivorous and will not accept dry foods — keepers must be prepared to offer live or meaty foods consistently. Water changes of 20–30% monthly and nitrate control below 50 mg/L are cited as appropriate maintenance for the species. Given its rarity in the trade and its specialised needs, it is not a beginner fish.
Conservation

No specific population trend or major threat has been documented in the sources reviewed here, and the assessment appears to rest on the absence of known widespread pressure rather than on a detailed recent population study.
