Despite belonging to the family Distichodontidae — a family best known for plant-grazing and fin-nipping relatives — this fish is a specialised, ambush-hunting piscivore: it waits motionless near the surface, then lunges to seize whole small fish rather than rasping fins or scales. Taxonomy & naming

Mesoborus crocodilus was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1900 and remains the only recognised species in the genus Mesoborus — a monospecific genus within the family Distichodontidae, order Characiformes. Distichodontidae is a diverse African characin family that also contains the plant-grazing Distichodus and the notorious fin- and scale-eating genera Belonophago, Phago and Eugnathichthys; Mesoborus stands apart from all of them, having evolved instead into a dedicated fish-eater.

A molecular and morphological study on jaw mechanics and diet within Distichodontidae (published in Ecology and Evolution) singled out Mesoborus crocodilus as a piscivorous specialist, distinct from both the herbivorous and the fin-eating lineages in the family, with a movable upper jaw adapted for seizing prey rather than rasping it.
