Taxonomy & naming
Metynnis altidorsalis was described by the German ichthyologist Ernst Ahl in 1923. It belongs to the family Serrasalmidae — the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Metynnis, one of several silver-dollar lineages (alongside Myloplus and others) that Serrasalmidae taxonomy has split apart over the past century as the family's older, catch-all genera were broken up. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for the valid combination Metynnis altidorsalis, and the species has historically been confused with, and at times treated as a synonym of, Metynnis hypsauchen — older aquarium and trade literature in particular often lists the two names interchangeably for very similar-looking fish.
The species epithet altidorsalis is straightforwardly descriptive, built from Latin altus ("high, tall") and dorsalis ("of the back"), referring to the elevated dorsal fin that distinguishes this species from flatter-backed relatives in the genus. As with most silver dollars, field identification within Metynnis is difficult and often requires close comparison of fin shape and body proportions rather than colour alone.
Morphology
Metynnis altidorsalis has the classic silver-dollar build: a strongly laterally compressed, near-circular body that gives the fish its coin-like profile, a small terminal mouth suited to grazing rather than seizing prey, and — true to its name — a noticeably tall, elevated dorsal fin set well back on the body. The flanks carry a bright, mirror-silver sheen that flashes as the fish turns within a school, a trait shared across the silver-dollar group and one reason they are prized as a schooling display fish.
FishBase records a maximum standard length of 4.5 in for the species, making it a modestly sized characin by Serrasalmidae standards — considerably smaller than the pacus in the same family, and comparable to many other Metynnis species. Sexual dimorphism is not well documented for this species (see "Mating").
Habitat
Metynnis altidorsalis is native to South America, recorded from rivers of the northern and eastern Guiana Shield. Within that range it occupies freshwater river channels and associated habitats, where it is found as a pelagic, schooling fish moving in mid-water and near the surface rather than hugging the substrate.
The cached sources note a preference for vegetation-rich stretches of river, consistent with its herbivorous diet — dense marginal and submerged plant growth provides both food and cover for a schooling grazer. Specific temperature and pH figures for wild populations were not captured in research for this article; as a lowland Guiana Shield river fish it is reasonable to expect warm, tropical conditions, but exact figures should not be assumed beyond what is documented.
Feeding
Metynnis altidorsalis is herbivorous, grazing on aquatic and marginal vegetation in the wild. Sources describe it as capable of stripping even relatively tough-leaved plants such as Anubias, underlining how thoroughly plant-based its natural diet is compared with the more opportunistic omnivory seen in true piranhas.
In the aquarium this translates directly: the diet should be built around vegetable matter — blanched vegetables such as courgette, cucumber and spinach, spirulina-based flakes or pellets, and algae wafers — supplemented with only modest amounts of protein. Keepers should expect the fish to treat any live plants in the tank as food rather than décor.
Mating
The cached sources describe an elaborate courtship period in Metynnis altidorsalis tied to the rainy season and the associated rise in water level, a seasonal cue shared by many Neotropical floodplain fish. Spawning behaviour is reported around a synchronized school of eight or more individuals rather than an isolated pair, which is consistent with the species' general schooling habit.
External sexual dimorphism is not reliably documented for this species in the sources reviewed; keepers and breeders in the hobby typically rely on conditioning a group and observing behavioural cues around spawning rather than sexing individual fish by appearance.
Breeding
Metynnis altidorsalis is an egg-scatterer: ripe females lay eggs onto submerged vegetation rather than building a nest or guarding a defended site, and the eggs receive no parental care once laid. This is the typical breeding mode for silver dollars as a group, distinct from the substrate-nesting, guarding behaviour of true piranhas in the same family.
The species is occasionally bred in the hobby, generally following a rise in temperature and a shift toward softer, more acidic water that mimics the wet-season trigger described above, with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops provided as an egg-catching substrate. Because the eggs and resulting fry are unguarded and the adults are enthusiastic plant-eaters, breeders typically remove the adults after spawning to protect both the eggs and the tank's vegetation.
In the aquarium
Metynnis altidorsalis is a peaceful community fish suited to a spacious, open-swimming aquarium — it should always be kept in a real group, not singly or in pairs, since it is a schooling fish by nature and settles and colours up best with company. The single most important planning decision for a keeper is accepting that this is not a fish for a planted aquascape: it is a determined plant-shredder that will strip soft-leaved species quickly and work through tougher ones like Anubias over time, so tank decor should lean toward robust hardscape — driftwood, rock and possibly hardy floating plants — rather than a delicate planted layout.
Given its adult size of a little over 4.5 in and its schooling requirement, a group needs meaningful swimming space and stable water quality with efficient filtration to handle a plant-heavy, high-turnover diet. It is a genuinely easy, undemanding aquarium fish once its two real requirements — company and open space — are met, making it a good choice for a large, hardy community setup rather than a delicate one.
Conservation
Metynnis altidorsalis is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, with the most recent assessment dated 2020. This reflects a wild population across Guiana Shield river systems that does not currently face significant documented threats.
As with many characins from this region, the primary long-term concerns for the species' native waters are the broader pressures facing Guiana Shield freshwater habitats — deforestation, mining-related sediment and water-quality change, and hydrological alteration — rather than any pressure specific to this species or its collection for the aquarium trade.
