Taxonomy & naming
Monostichodus lootensi was described by the Belgian ichthyologists Max Poll and Jacques Daget in 1968, within the family Distichodontidae — the African characin family that also contains the far larger, more familiar Distichodus species kept in the aquarium trade. The genus Monostichodus itself has had an unsettled taxonomic history: it was for some decades treated as a synonym or subgenus within Distichodus before being re-established as a valid genus by Musschoot (2017) in the Journal of Fish Biology, a revision confirmed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), which is followed here.
Because of that history, older literature and some aggregator databases may still list this species under Distichodus lootensi; this article uses the currently valid combination, Monostichodus lootensi. The species has not been assigned any common or trade name in the sources reviewed, which is consistent with its very limited presence, if any, in the aquarium hobby.
Morphology
Monostichodus lootensi is a small distichodontid, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 2 in (about 2 in total length) — tiny compared with the 8–15.5 in-plus Distichodus species more familiar to aquarists. Beyond the size record and its placement within Distichodontidae on the strength of Musschoot's (2017) morphological and molecular work re-establishing the genus, no detailed description of body shape, fin counts, colouration or dentition was found in the sources consulted for this article; data are sparse.
Habitat
The species is known from the Ruki River and Lake Tumba, both in the central Congo Basin of the Democratic Republic of Congo — a region of warm, generally soft, often tannin-stained blackwater habitat typical of the central Congo's forested lowlands. A record from Pool Malebo (Stanley Pool, on the main Congo River) is flagged as questionable in the source material and should not be treated as a confirmed part of the species' range.
No specific temperature, pH or hardness measurements for the species' native water were found in the sources reviewed; broadly, Congo Basin blackwater tributaries of this kind run warm and soft-to-acidic, but that is a regional generalisation rather than a documented figure for this species specifically.
Feeding
No diet information specific to Monostichodus lootensi was found in the sources consulted. More broadly, distichodontids as a family tend toward herbivory or omnivory — larger Distichodus species are well known as plant grazers — but extending that pattern to this small, poorly studied species without direct evidence would be guesswork, so it is not asserted here. Breeding biology for Monostichodus lootensi is undocumented. Given the complete absence of husbandry or aquaculture records, no breeding mode can be honestly reported here beyond that general family pattern, and it should not be assumed to apply to this species specifically.

Monostichodus lootensi does not appear to be established in the aquarium trade, and no husbandry accounts, care guides or hobbyist reports were found in the sources reviewed. Its very small adult size (around 2 in SL) would in principle make it far more manageable than its large, plant-shredding Distichodus relatives, but with no documented water parameters, diet or behavioural notes specific to the species, any care recommendation would be speculative. Prospective keepers should treat this as an essentially undescribed species in captivity.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Monostichodus lootensi as Least Concern (assessment dated February 2009), and FishBase records a correspondingly low vulnerability-to-fishing score (10 of 100). The species is restricted to a limited area of the central Congo Basin — the Ruki River and Lake Tumba — but there is no indication in the sources reviewed of significant population decline or targeted exploitation. As with much of the Congo Basin's aquatic fauna, broader regional pressures such as deforestation and water-quality change are long-term watch items even though the species itself is not currently classed as threatened.
