Neolebias gossei was described by the Belgian ichthyologists Max Poll and Arsène Lambert in 1964. It sits in the genus Neolebias, a group of small African characins within the family Distichodontidae — a family whose better-known members, the Distichodus species, are far larger, deep-bodied plant grazers, making Neolebias something of an outlier in body plan and lifestyle within its own family.
The species is known only from the Ogowe (Ogooué) River basin in Gabon, its type locality, and appears to be a narrow-range endemic. Documentation on the species is sparse: it is recorded in FishBase and assessed by the IUCN, but detailed taxonomic revision, population genetics or a broader distributional review do not appear to be available from the sources consulted here. Morphology
