Parodon apolinari is a small, quiet grazing characin from the upper Orinoco drainage of Colombia, one of roughly two dozen species in the family Parodontidae — a group of slender, bottom-oriented "scrapers" that spend their days rasping algae and biofilm off rocks rather than chasing prey. At barely 4.5 in it shares none of the size or menace of its more famous serrasalmid relatives; its distinguishing feature is a downturned, sucker-like mouth built for grazing hard substrates in flowing water, and in males, elongated filaments on the first dorsal-fin rays. It is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade, but its biology is a useful reminder that "characin" covers everything from piranhas to placid algae-scrapers, and that this group's honest hook is not danger but diversity.

Taxonomy & naming

Parodon apolinari was described by the American ichthyologist George S. Myers in 1930 from material collected in the Guavio River near Guaicaramo, in the Orinoco basin of Colombia; the holotype (CAS-SU 23725) is held at the California Academy of Sciences, whose Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) remains the standing authority on the name. It belongs to the family Parodontidae within the order Characiformes, a small family of scraping characins usually placed near the headstanders and, more distantly, the true piranhas and pacus of Serrasalmidae covered elsewhere in this atlas.

The species has had a slightly unsettled taxonomic history: the American ichthyologist Henry W. Fowler designated P. apolinari in 1943 as the type species of a proposed monotypic subgenus, Nematoparodon, based on the filamentous extensions of the first two branched dorsal-fin rays and a higher count of nuptial (breeding) tubercles than is typical for the genus. Subsequent revisions of Colombian Parodon have kept the species in the main genus Parodon rather than elevating Nematoparodon, and that is the combination used here. The species epithet honours Brother Apolinar María (1867–1949), a Spanish-born missionary monk and naturalist based in Bogotá who collected extensively in Colombia and supported the ichthyological fieldwork that produced the type series.

Morphology

Parodon apolinari is a small, elongate, fusiform characin, reaching a documented maximum of about 4.5 in standard length — modest even by the standards of "minor characins," and far removed from the large-bodied pacus and dorados that share this atlas section. The head carries the family's defining feature: a subterminal, downturned mouth with a hardened, scraper-like lower lip adapted for rasping algae and organic film from rock and wood surfaces in current, rather than for capturing prey.

Males of this species are distinguished by elongated filamentous extensions on the first one or two branched dorsal-fin rays, along with an elevated count of small, hooked nuptial tubercles that develop during breeding condition — the character set Fowler used to define his (now generally unrecognised) subgenus Nematoparodon. Colouration in Parodon generally runs silvery to olive along the flanks with faint dusky banding or blotching, typical countershading for a fish that forages over rock and gravel in flowing water; detailed live colour description for this specific species is not well documented in the sources available.

Habitat

The species is known from the upper Orinoco basin of Colombia, with its type locality in the Guavio River near Guaicaramo — a piedmont drainage where Andean tributaries transition into lowland Orinoco waters.
