Taxonomy & naming
Sartor elongatus was described by Santos & Jégu in 1987 and placed in the small genus Sartor within the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, in the order Characiformes. The genus sits alongside the far better-known headstander genera Leporinus, Anostomus and Chilodus, all of which share the family's characteristic angled, head-down feeding posture, but Sartor is a much smaller and more narrowly distributed genus than its relatives.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) governs the valid name and authorship, and current records treat Sartor elongatus as a valid, accepted species rather than a synonym or variant. Given how little has been published on the genus since its description, it would not be surprising if future revisionary work on Anostomidae touches Sartor, but nothing in the available sources suggests a pending reclassification, so the name is used here as currently recognised.
Morphology
As its species epithet suggests, Sartor elongatus has an elongated, torpedo-like body compared with the deeper-bodied headstanders in genera like Anostomus and Chilodus. It is a genuinely small fish: FishBase records a maximum length of just 3 in standard length, making it one of the more diminutive members of the headstander family rather than the larger, more heavily built Leporinus species that dominate the aquarium side of the group.
Detailed morphological description beyond size and family-typical build is sparse in the available literature. Like other anostomids it can be expected to show the family's typical terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouth and body plan suited to grazing at an angle off hard surfaces, but specific counts, colouration and fin details are not documented in accessible sources — an honest gap rather than a guess.
Habitat
Sartor elongatus is documented as endemic to the Trombetas and Mapuera river basins in the Brazilian Amazon, both blackwater tributary systems in the state of Pará. FishBase classifies it as a benthopelagic freshwater fish of tropical rivers, consistent with a species that grazes over submerged substrate rather than living in open midwater.
Specific water chemistry data — pH, hardness, and temperature range — has not been captured for this species in the sources reviewed here, so no numeric range is given rather than an invented one. Given its Amazonian blackwater basin, softer and more acidic water is plausible, but that is an inference from the region, not a documented fact for the species itself, and should be treated as such by anyone attempting to keep it.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Sartor elongatus a trophic level of 2.6, consistent with a herbivorous-to-detritivorous grazer rather than a predator or omnivore with a significant animal-protein component. This fits the broader headstander pattern: an aufwuchs feeder that tips into its distinctive oblique, head-down posture to rasp algae and biofilm from wood, rock and other submerged surfaces, supplementing that scraped material with whatever fine organic detritus and small invertebrates come with it.
No aquarium feeding data exists for this species specifically. Based on its trophic level and family, a keeper would reasonably expect it to need vegetable-forward foods — algae wafers, blanched vegetables, spirulina-based flake — with at most incidental protein, in the same vein as other grazing anostomids, but this is an inference rather than a documented feeding regime.
Mating
No courtship or pairing behaviour has been documented for Sartor elongatus in the sources available. Headstanders as a family are broadly reported as egg-scatterers with no elaborate pair-bonding ritual described in the literature, but nothing specific to this species — triggers, sexual dimorphism, or courtship display — has been recorded, and none should be assumed.
Breeding
There is no documented breeding record for Sartor elongatus in captivity. Headstanders in general, including the better-known Leporinus and Anostomus species, are egg-scatterers with no parental care, and a handful of Leporinus species are farmed commercially, but Sartor elongatus itself does not appear in aquarium breeding reports. Given how rarely the species is even kept, it should be treated as essentially unbred in the hobby — a fish encountered, if at all, as a wild-collected specimen rather than one with an established captive-breeding history.
In the aquarium
Sartor elongatus has essentially no presence in the aquarium hobby. A search of hobbyist reference sites such as SeriouslyFish turned up no dedicated care profile, and the species is not established in the trade the way common Leporinus and Anostomus headstanders are. What can be said comes from its biology: at a maximum of 3 in SL it is a genuinely small fish, well within the range of a modest aquarium, and its grazing habit means it would benefit from driftwood and rock surfaces to browse along with a vegetable-rich diet.
Because so little is documented, a prospective keeper should treat any specimen encountered in the trade as effectively wild-collected and poorly understood, and should not assume the nippy, territorial temperament reported for some larger Leporinus and Anostomus species necessarily applies here — nor should they assume it doesn't. This is a fish where "data sparse" is the honest and complete answer for husbandry specifics.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Sartor elongatus as Data Deficient on 7 November 2018, reflecting how little population, threat and trend information exists for a narrowly distributed species restricted to the Trombetas and Mapuera basins. GBIF occurrence data confirms it as endemic to Brazil within the Anostomidae.
The Trombetas and Mapuera systems have been affected by hydroelectric development and associated land-use change in the wider Amazon basin, which is a relevant long-term watch item for any narrow-range endemic in the region, though no species-specific threat assessment beyond the DD listing exists in the sources reviewed. Without dedicated population surveys, its true conservation status remains genuinely unknown rather than presumptively safe.
