Taxonomy & naming
Serrasalmus altispinis was described in 2000 by Merckx, Jégu and Santos in the journal Cybium (volume 24, issue 2, page 191), with its type locality given as the Quarenta Ilhas rapids on the Pitinga River, part of the Uatumã basin in Amazonas, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) — the standing authority for valid fish names — lists it as a currently valid species within Serrasalmus, the largest genus of true piranhas.
Serrasalmus sits in the family Serrasalmidae alongside the pacus and silver dollars, but the true piranhas — Serrasalmus and the related Pygocentrus and Pristobrycon — are set apart by a single row of interlocking, tricuspid, blade-edged teeth built for shearing flesh rather than the more herbivorous dentition of their pacu relatives. The genus itself has undergone repeated taxonomic revision as more rapids- and river-restricted species like S. altispinis have been described from across the Amazon, and species-level identification within Serrasalmus is notoriously difficult, resting on fine details of spine counts, humeral spot pattern and body depth — the latter reflected in the specific epithet altispinis.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum published length of 8.5 in total length for Serrasalmus altispinis, placing it among the more modestly sized true piranhas — smaller than the well-known black piranha (S. rhombeus) or the red-bellied piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri) at their largest. Like other Serrasalmus it has the classic piranha build: a deep, laterally compressed body, an underslung lower jaw, and a continuous row of sharp, interlocking triangular teeth replaced in sets rather than individually.
The epithet altispinis ("high spine") points to a distinguishing feature of the species' predorsal or pelvic spination noted in the original 2000 description, one of the fine anatomical characters used to separate it from closely related rapids-dwelling Serrasalmus in the same river system. Detailed colouration and pattern data for live specimens are sparse in the available sources; as in most Serrasalmus, a humeral shoulder spot and silvery flanks are typical of the genus, but species-specific colour description should not be assumed without a verified source.
Habitat
Serrasalmus altispinis is known from the Pitinga River and the wider Uatumã basin in the Brazilian Amazon, a blackwater tributary system running roughly between 0° and 3° south of the equator. FishBase describes the species as potamodromous, meaning it makes wholly freshwater migrations within river systems rather than moving to sea, and assigns it a trophic level of 3.5 — consistent with an intermediate predator that takes other animals but is not an apex piranha.
The type locality itself, the Quarenta Ilhas rapids, signals a fish associated with fast-flowing, structurally complex rapids habitat rather than still floodplain lakes — a common pattern among the more narrowly distributed Serrasalmus species, several of which are restricted to specific rapids stretches of Amazon tributaries. Mating
No courtship or pairing behaviour specific to Serrasalmus altispinis was found in the sources consulted, and detailed reproductive biology for most rapids-dwelling Serrasalmus species remains poorly documented in the wild. Like its congener S. altuvei — used here as a care proxy for the wider genus in the absence of species-specific husbandry data — solitary, territorial Serrasalmus are aggressive toward their own kind and toward most tankmates, and are almost always kept as a single specimen in a species-only tank. A minimum tank size in the region of 65 US gal (roughly 120×45×17.5 in) is a reasonable proxy starting point for a similarly sized congener, with the fish's own modest maximum of 8.5 in TL meaning it does not demand the vast tanks that larger Serrasalmus or Pygocentrus eventually require.
The jaws are real and the fin-nipping risk to any tankmate is high, so this is a fish for a dedicated keeper prepared to run it alone, move it by container rather than net, and respect the bite at feeding and maintenance time. As with all piranhas, ownership of Serrasalmus is restricted or banned outright in many U.S. states and a number of countries because of invasive-species concern — check state and local law before acquiring one, and never release a piranha into open water under any circumstances. Given how little husbandry-specific information exists for this exact species, a keeper should also expect trial-and-error and lean on general Serrasalmus care experience rather than assuming close parity with better-documented species.
Conservation
FishBase records Serrasalmus altispinis as IUCN Least Concern, with the assessment dated December 2020. This reflects, as with many Amazonian serrasalmids, a species that is not currently known to be under significant threat, though its documented range appears narrow — centred on the Uatumã/Pitinga basin — compared with wide-ranging piranhas like Pygocentrus nattereri.
As a rapids specialist in a single Amazon tributary system, S. altispinis would be expected to be sensitive to the same broad pressures facing Amazonian river fish generally — damming and hydrological change in particular, since rapids habitat is exactly the kind of stretch targeted for hydroelectric development.
