Skiotocharax meizon was described in 2000 by Barbara Presswell, Stanley H. Weitzman and Tui Bergquist as a new genus and species from Guyana, published in Ichthyologische Explorationen von Süsswässern alongside a discussion of the genus's relationships within the family Crenuchidae. It remains the only described species in the genus Skiotocharax, making it monospecific — every specimen assignable to the genus is, by definition, this species.
Crenuchidae, the darter characins (sometimes called South American darters), is a family of small, often cryptic characiforms distinguished from most other tetra-like fishes by their benthic, perching habits rather than open-water shoaling. Well-known relatives in the hobby include the sailfin characin Crenuchus spilurus and the true darters of the genus Characidium; Skiotocharax sits among this group as a poorly known, narrow-range specialist rather than a common aquarium staple.
Morphology
Skiotocharax meizon is a genuinely tiny fish: FishBase records a maximum standard length of just 1.5 in, placing it firmly in nano-fish territory alongside the smallest tetras and rasboras kept in the hobby.
