Taxonomy & naming
Steindachnerina atratoensis was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912, taking its species epithet directly from its type locality, the Río Atrato of Colombia. It sits in the family Curimatidae — small, toothless, deep-river and floodplain characins collectively known as curimatas — within the order Characiformes, and in the genus Steindachnerina, itself named for the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid combination Steindachnerina atratoensis.
What makes this species biogeographically notable is its range: most curimatids and their relatives are trans-Amazonian, cis-Andean fish, but S. atratoensis is one of a small number of characiforms recorded on the Pacific/Caribbean side of the Andes, in the Atrato basin of Colombia. Published biogeographic work on Curimatidae treats it as representing a trans-Andean dispersal event within the family, distinguishing it from its close Amazonian and Orinocoan congeners. As with many single-river curimatids, taxonomic and distributional data remain sparse, and this account does not go beyond what the record actually establishes.
Morphology

Like other curimatids, it almost certainly lacks the interlocking bladed teeth that define the true piranhas in this same broader "Piranhas & Pacus" group — Curimatidae are functionally toothless or near-toothless characins, built for grazing rather than biting, with a small subterminal or slightly downturned mouth suited to picking detritus and biofilm off substrate rather than seizing prey. Habitat
The species is endemic to the Río Atrato drainage of northwestern Colombia, a warm Caribbean-slope lowland river system that lies west of the Andes rather than in the Amazon or Orinoco. This places it in the North Andean Pacific Slopes freshwater ecoregion associated with the Atrato basin, an area of humid tropical lowland with high endemism and comparatively limited ichthyological survey coverage.

Given its likely 3–4.5 in estimated adult size and its place among the quiet, shoaling curimatid grazers, a keeper who did encounter wild-collected specimens should plan for a group of a peaceful, sediment-and-biofilm-grazing fish in a well-established, planted or driftwood-furnished tank with soft, sifted substrate to forage over — but this is an inference from its family's general husbandry pattern, not a documented care record for the species itself.
Because it is a narrow-range Atrato endemic rather than a farmed or widely distributed species, any specimens that do reach the trade would be wild-collected, and prospective keepers should treat that as a conservation consideration rather than a routine purchase.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Steindachnerina atratoensis as Near Threatened, consistent with its status as a narrow-range endemic restricted to the Río Atrato drainage of Colombia — a single-basin distribution that leaves it vulnerable to localised habitat degradation, deforestation-linked sedimentation and water-quality pressures affecting that river system, even though no acute, well-documented threat was captured in the cached sources.
As with many small, single-river curimatids, this species receives little conservation attention relative to flagship Amazonian fish, and survey and monitoring data specific to it are limited.
