Utiaritichthys sennaebragai is an obscure, rarely traded silver dollar from the middle and lower Amazon and the Orinoco basin — a deep-bodied, disc-shaped herbivore in the same family as the piranhas (Serrasalmidae) but built for grazing rather than biting. Named for the rapids at Salto de Utiarity where the type specimens were taken, it reaches a substantial 12.5 in SL, considerably larger than the small tetra-shop "silver dollars" most aquarists know, and it makes its living scraping aquatic plants and filamentous algae from submerged rock and wood in fast, well-oxygenated water. Almost nothing has been published on it beyond taxonomy, distribution and basic life history, so this account is deliberately conservative: it is a plant-shredding schooling grazer for a large, hard-scaped river tank, not a candidate for a planted aquascape, and its breeding biology in the wild and in captivity is essentially undocumented.

Taxonomy & naming

Utiaritichthys sennaebragai was described in 1937 by the Brazilian ichthyologist Alípio de Miranda Ribeiro, based on specimens collected at Salto de Utiarity, a set of rapids and falls on the Papagaio River in Mato Grosso, Brazil, which also supplies the genus name — Utiarit(y) + ichthys, Greek for "fish". The species epithet honours Colonel Senna Braga, the commander of the engineering corps who helped obtain the type specimens during the expedition. It belongs to the family Serrasalmidae — the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars — within the order Characiformes, and Animal Diversity Web places it in the subfamily Myleinae alongside other silver-dollar-type grazers.

The genus Utiaritichthys is small and poorly known even by the standards of Serrasalmidae, a family that has undergone heavy revision in recent decades as older "wastebasket" genera such as Myleus have been split apart. The cache and reference sources used here treat Utiaritichthys sennaebragai as the currently valid combination; nothing in the record available for this account suggests a synonymy or recombination, so the original genus placement is retained without alteration.

Morphology

Like other Serrasalmidae grazers, Utiaritichthys sennaebragai has the classic silver-dollar body plan: strongly laterally compressed, deep and disc-shaped, an adaptation shared across the subfamily for manoeuvring in current and presenting a narrow profile to predators. FishBase records a maximum size of 12.5 in standard length, which is large for a fish most aquarists would picture as a "silver dollar" — closer to the size of a sizeable pacu than to the small Metynnis species typically sold under that name.

Detailed published description of colour pattern, fin shape and dentition specific to this species is sparse in the sources available; what is documented is the ecological role implied by its dentition and jaw structure, which — consistent with its Podostemaceae- and algae-based diet — is built for scraping and cropping vegetation from rock and wood rather than for slicing flesh, the opposite specialisation from its piranha relatives in the same family.

Given its documented maximum size of 12.5 in SL and its origin in fast, well-oxygenated rapids, any tank attempting to house it would need to be large, long, and strongly filtered to provide current, with hard, algae-friendly décor (rock and driftwood) rather than a delicate planted layout — like its silver-dollar relatives, a herbivorous grazer of this size should be expected to shred soft aquatic plants rather than coexist with them.

As with other Serrasalmidae grazers, a group setting rather than a lone specimen is the sensible default assumption pending direct data, since shoaling is the norm across the subfamily. No specific temperament, tankmate compatibility or filtration requirements have been documented for this species; keepers considering it should treat every husbandry detail beyond size and diet as unconfirmed.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Utiaritichthys sennaebragai as Least Concern, with an assessment dated 22 December 2020.
