Taxonomy & naming
Dasyloricaria latiura was described by Eigenmann and Vance in 1912. Its authority is cited in parentheses, (Eigenmann & Vance, 1912), reflecting a change of genus since the original description; the combination Dasyloricaria latiura is confirmed against the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS). It is a distinct, valid species — not to be confused with the better-known Dasyloricaria filamentosa, with which it has sometimes been conflated.
The genus Dasyloricaria belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae, the whiptail catfishes characterised by their long, slender, depressed bodies and elongated caudal regions. The species occupies the trans-Andean drainages of Lower Central America and northwestern South America. The name Dasyloricaria capetensis is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The name Dasyloricaria tuyrensis is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Dasyloricaria latiura reaches a maximum of about 14 in in standard length (SL), as recorded by Ferraris (2003) in the Check List of freshwater fishes — making it a relatively large whiptail loricariine. As a member of the Loricariinae, it has the characteristic elongate, dorsoventrally flattened body and attenuated tail typical of the subfamily, covered in the bony dermal plates shared across the family. The cached source does not record detailed meristic diagnostics or sexual dimorphism for this species; the maximum length is reported from male or unsexed material.
Habitat
Dasyloricaria latiura is a trans-Andean species occurring in the Tuíra River basin of Panama and the Atrato River basin of Colombia — drainages on the western (Pacific and Caribbean) side of the Andes, isolated from the Amazon and Orinoco systems. It is a freshwater, demersal, tropical fish, living close to the bottom. These trans-Andean rivers are warm lowland systems; no species-specific water chemistry is recorded in the cached source.
