Plecos carry names on two tracks. A scientific binomial under the Catalog of Fishes — and, for the morphs that reached the trade before (or instead of) a formal description, a DATZ L-number like L046 (the zebra pleco) or L018 (the gold nugget). This index cross-references all three layers — the 989 scientific names, 151 L-numbers, and 1,144 common names — and resolves each one to its species page.

L-number — the DATZ trade code (and its LDA sister series) introduced in 1988 to label undescribed or unidentified pleco morphs; many remain the primary identity token in the hobby even after a species is formally described. Scientific name — the valid binomial under the Catalog of Fishes. Common name — English vernacular and trade names recorded for the species.
