Exastilithoxus fimbriatus is a tiny, rock-clinging catfish from the fast-water tributaries of the upper Orinoco system in Venezuela — a fish so obscure that its original holotype remained the primary source of morphological knowledge for decades. One of only two species in a genus endemic to the Guiana Shield's hard, blackwater rapids, it is almost never encountered in the aquarium trade, a rarity that owes as much to the inaccessibility of its highland habitat as to any particular sensitivity of the fish itself.

Taxonomy & naming

Exastilithoxus fimbriatus was originally described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1915, in a preliminary note published in the Anzeiger der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Wien (vol. 52, no. 17, p. 201), under the original combination Pseudacanthicus fimbriatus. The type locality is given as Río Coquenan (= Río Cuquenan, also spelled Cuquenán), Venezuela — a tributary of the upper Río Caroní, itself part of the Orinoco drainage. A fuller formal description followed in Steindachner's 1917 paper in the Denkschriften der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften (vol. 93). The species is known only from the holotype.

The genus Exastilithoxus was erected by Isbrücker & Nijssen (1985) to accommodate fimbriatus and its newly described congener E. hoedemani, removing the species from Pseudacanthicus and placing it in what is now recognised as the tribe Lithoxini within Hypostominae (Armbruster 2004; Lujan, Armbruster & Lovejoy 2018). The genus name derives from the Greek exastis (a thread drawn from a weave), lithos (stone), and oxys (sharp) — a compound alluding to the genus's sharp-bodied, rock-surface lifestyle. Synonyms include Lithoxus fimbriatus (used in some older catalogues) and Pseudocanthicus fimbriatus (a misspelling variant).

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; updated June 2026) lists the valid combination as Exastilithoxus fimbriatus (Steindachner 1915). No L-number has been assigned. ITIS records it under TSN 680102.

Morphology

Exastilithoxus fimbriatus is a small loricariid, with a maximum standard length of approximately 2.5 in (FishBase Ref. 36713) — Suedamerikafans.de, drawing on Seidel & Evers (2005), gives a total length of about 3 in. For a plecos it is decidedly diminutive, closer in body plan to a Chaetostoma or Microlepidogaster than to the large armoured forms that dominate the hobby.

The body is strongly flattened dorsoventrally, an adaptation to clinging to exposed rock surfaces in torrential current. The dermal armour is composed of keeled scutes. Fin formula from available data: dorsal fin I/7 rays, pectoral fins with 5 soft rays, pelvic fins with 5 soft rays, anal fin I/5 rays, caudal fin slightly concave with a pointed margin (Suedamerikafans data). The caudal fin shape separates it from the more broadly forked caudal fins seen in some other Lithoxini.

The genus name's allusion to thread-like projections points to the characteristic fimbriae (fringe-like dermal papillae or odontodes) around the mouth — the 'fringelip' feature that gives the species its English name and from which the specific epithet fimbriatus ('fringed' in Latin) is also drawn. As with most rheophilic (current-loving) loricariids, the pectoral fin spine is enlarged for bracing against the substrate in flow.

Sexual dimorphism has not been formally described for this species; based on the tribe, males of related Lithoxini likely develop more prominent snout odontodes when mature.

Habitat

The Río Cuquenan (Coquenan) is a right-bank tributary of the upper Río Caroní in Bolívar State, Venezuela, draining the tepui (table-mountain) highlands of the Gran Sabana at approximately 5.1°N, 60.8°W. The Caroní in turn flows north into the lower Orinoco just upstream of Ciudad Bolívar. Collections of E. fimbriatus have also been recorded from the nearby Matacuni River drainage in the Orinoco system (FishBase; PlanetCatfish).

This is a Guiana Shield landscape: ancient Precambrian granites and quartzites, eroded into spectacular tabletop mountains (tepuis) and broad savannahs, drained by fast, clear to blackwater rivers of very low mineral content. Water chemistry in these highland streams is characteristically soft (near-zero hardness), strongly acidic to neutral, warm (77–82 °F at lower elevations), and extremely oxygen-rich due to turbulent flow.

The microhabitat is the exposed rock face and boulder field of active rapids — a physically demanding environment shared by other Lithoxini such as Lithoxus and Exastilithoxus hoedemani. These fish press tightly against rock using the ventral sucker complex, feed on the periphyton coating wet rock surfaces, and shelter in rock crevices or beneath boulders when not actively feeding. The tribe Lithoxini appears restricted to the Guiana Shield and its associated blackwater, shield-draining rivers.

Feeding

Exastilithoxus fimbriatus is presumed to be a periphyton scraper and insect-eater — Suedamerikafans.de categorises its primary nutrition as insect-based, which is consistent with the substrate and habitat type. In fast-water Loricariidae more broadly, epilithic algae and biofilm dominate the diet, supplemented by invertebrates, primarily aquatic insect larvae (chironomids, simuliids, and ephemeropterans) that colonise the same rock surfaces. Diets in torrential-habitat loricariids often contain more animal material than in quieter-water relatives, reflecting the richer invertebrate communities of well-oxygenated rapids.

The fringed or papillate lip margin that gives the species its common name may assist in scraping or sieving fine material — soft, flexible lip tissue with a fringe of sensory or adhesive papillae is common in rheophilic plecos that feed on irregular rock surfaces, where the lips serve both as a food-capture structure and as part of the adhesion system in current.

In the aquarium, closely related Lithoxini are typically maintained on a diet of algae wafers, spirulina, and sinking insect-based foods, with occasional frozen bloodworm or brine shrimp. They require the surface area of smooth rocks and slate to graze naturally, and thrive with directed, high-velocity water flow over feeding areas.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour for Exastilithoxus fimbriatus has not been described in the wild or in captivity; PlanetCatfish records no breeding reports for the species. The following is inferred from the broader tribe Lithoxini and rheophilic Hypostominae.

In torrential-habitat loricariids, males typically establish and defend small rock crevices or sheltered pockets within the rapids zone as nest sites. Males in breeding condition are characterised by broader heads and, in some related taxa, a denser growth of fine odontodes around the snout margin — ScotCat notes this pattern for Lithoxancistrus orinoco, a broadly similar Hypostominae from the same drainage system, and it likely applies here. The compact body size of E. fimbriatus means nest sites would be correspondingly small: tight crevices between boulders or narrow rock cavities.

Females in reproductive condition are presumably wider-bodied when gravid. Courtship has not been observed. Given the highly specialised habitat requirements (fast, oxygen-rich, acidic water over exposed rock), successful reproduction in captivity would require extremely well-designed biotope conditions that are rarely attempted for such obscure species.

Breeding

No captive breeding has been reported for Exastilithoxus fimbriatus. The species has rarely if ever entered the ornamental trade, and even specialist pleco keepers have had negligible experience with it. The following is entirely inferred from the genus and tribe.

Like other Hypostominae, the tribe Lithoxini is presumed to be a cave or crevice-spawning group with adhesive eggs and some degree of parental care — most likely paternal guarding and fanning, as seen across the subfamily. Egg numbers would likely be small given the species' diminutive size. Fry would be expected to emerge as functional bottom-dwellers, immediately beginning to graze on periphyton.

Anyone attempting to maintain this species in captivity would need a dedicated biotope aquarium with smooth river stones and/or slate arranged to create tight crevices, very high water flow directed over the rock surfaces, soft, acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5), temperature 77–81 °F, and excellent oxygenation. Standard community-pleco husbandry is unlikely to support a healthy specimen, let alone successful reproduction. This is a challenging specialist subject, and the necessary captive-husbandry data do not yet exist in the hobby.

In the aquarium

Exastilithoxus fimbriatus is absent from the commercial aquarium trade and is extraordinarily unlikely to be available through conventional channels. It is known primarily from a single holotype and a small number of additional records from the Caroní and Matacuni drainages; the species has not been assigned an L-number and is not represented in community aquarium databases.

Should specimens ever become available — through research collection or specialist collection expeditions — the appropriate setup would be a dedicated rapids biotope: a relatively small aquarium (15–20 US gal is sufficient for the species' size) with a powerful return pump or powerhead creating a strong, directional current over a bed of smooth boulders, slate, and river gravel. Sand should fill the interstices. Water chemistry must closely match the Guiana Shield origin: very soft (near-zero hardness, conductivity under 100 µS/cm), pH 5.5–6.5, temperature 77–82 °F, and high dissolved oxygen throughout.

At approximately 2.5–3 in total length, this is not a fish that requires large quarters, but it requires specific hydraulic conditions. Tankmates should be limited to other species from similarly fast, soft-water highland habitats — small rheophilic characids, other Guiana Shield loricariids — if the biotope is to remain appropriate. Standard community tank species from hard, neutral, low-flow setups are likely incompatible.

The species' rarity means there is no hobbyist husbandry record to draw on; keepers should approach any specimen with scrupulous attention to water quality and flow, willingness to adjust based on the fish's behaviour, and contact with the specialist pleco community at PlanetCatfish for current best practice.

Conservation

Exastilithoxus fimbriatus was assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient in 2020, reflecting the species' extremely limited record (effectively a single type locality and a small number of subsequent collections) and the absence of population trend data. Data Deficiency in this context should not be read as security: a species known from one holotype and a narrow highland drainage is inherently vulnerable to localised disturbance.

The upper Río Caroní watershed in Bolívar State, Venezuela sits within the Gran Sabana National Park and the broader Canaima National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), which affords a degree of de jure habitat protection. However, gold mining activities — both legal and artisanal illegal — have affected river systems in the Guiana Shield, and mercury contamination from alluvial gold extraction has been documented in Caroní tributaries. The tepui-draining streams are also extremely sensitive to any changes in catchment vegetation or hydrology given their naturally low buffering capacity.

Conservation of this species depends primarily on the integrity of its native rivers within the protected area system. Targeted biological surveys of the upper Caroní and Matacuni drainages would be valuable to establish whether E. fimbriatus is genuinely rare or simply poorly collected in an underexplored region.
