Harttia gracilis is one of Brazil's rarest and least-known whiptail loricariids — a slender, armoured catfish barely wider than a finger, haunting cold, oxygen-rich headwater streams in the highlands of Minas Gerais and São Paulo. Its restricted range, naturally sparse populations, and sensitivity to habitat degradation have earned it Near Threatened status on the IUCN Red List, yet it remains almost unknown in the hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Harttia gracilis was formally described by O.T. Oyakawa in 1993, in a monograph revising the genus published in Comunicações do Museu de Ciências da PUCRS, Série Zoologia (volume 6, pages 3–27). The holotype (MZUSP 43267) was collected from the upper Rio Paraná basin, at approximately 20°58'S, 46°47'W in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Paratypes are deposited at MCP, MNRJ, and MZUSP. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS, updated June 2026) recognises the valid combination Harttia gracilis Oyakawa 1993, within the family Loricariidae, subfamily Loricariinae.

The genus Harttia Steindachner 1877 was erected to honour Charles Frederick Hartt (1840–1878), the Canadian geologist and naturalist who participated in the Thayer Expedition to Brazil (1865–1866). Harttia is placed in the tribe Harttiini of Loricariinae (Armbruster 2004; Covain et al. 2015), a clade of slender, depressed, whiptail-like loricariids that differ from the Loricariinae proper (e.g. Loricaria, Rineloricaria) in several meristic and osteological characters. No L-number has been assigned to this species, which is not collected commercially.

Morphology

Adults reach a maximum standard length of 4 in (Oyakawa 1993; Ferraris in Reis et al. 2003), making H. gracilis one of the smaller members of its genus. The body is strongly depressed and elongated in the loricariid whiptail fashion: the head and thorax are broad and flattened for hydrodynamic purchase on rocky substrates, tapering rapidly to a slender, laterally compressed caudal peduncle. The mouth is ventrally positioned with coarse, bicuspid teeth arranged in short series, suited for scraping biofilm and periphyton from rock and wood surfaces.

The body surface is covered in overlapping bony scutes arranged in lateral series; the arrangement of the mid-dorsal and lateral plates is an important diagnostic character for Harttiini species. Ground colour is typically brownish to greyish-brown dorsally, paler ventrally, with a faint pattern of spots or reticulations that tends to be less pronounced in preserved specimens. The caudal fin bears a pointed lower lobe, a characteristic shared across the subfamily.

Sexual dimorphism has not been extensively documented for this species. As in related Harttia, breeding males are expected to develop elongated pectoral-spine odontodes; females are likely deeper-bodied when gravid. No bristle development comparable to Ancistrus occurs in this genus.

Habitat

Harttia gracilis is endemic to Brazil, restricted to headwater streams (riachos de altitude) within the upper Rio Paraná drainage in the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo. Confirmed localities include: a tributary of the Rio São João near Fortaleza de Minas (MG), near the old Minas-Perobas railway; the Rio Sapucaí basin at Campos do Jordão and São Bento do Sapucaí (SP); and, according to Ingenito and Buckup (2007), streams draining the Serra da Mantiqueira from the Itabapoana to the Rio São João in northern Rio de Janeiro. The IUCN estimated an extent of occurrence of approximately 8,575 mi².

The microhabitat is characterised by clear, cold, fast-flowing water with a rocky substrate, abundant dissolved oxygen, and riparian vegetation providing shade and structural cover. The species hides among the submerged root masses of riverbank vegetation — a behaviour that makes conventional electrofishing surveys inefficient and likely causes it to be underdetected. Water parameters in these Atlantic Forest highland streams are typically cool (around 61–72 °F at elevation), circumneutral to mildly acidic, and soft to moderately hard. Recent collection attempts at the type locality have been unsuccessful, suggesting the species may have declined at some historical sites.

Feeding

Like most loricariin loricariids, Harttia gracilis is an opportunistic periphyton grazer. Its ventrally positioned mouth with spatulate, bicuspid teeth is adapted for scraping the thin film of algae, diatoms, and associated organic material from rock surfaces, submerged wood, and plant roots. The trophic level assigned to the genus by model-based estimates in FishBase (approximately 2.6) is consistent with primary consumption of benthic algae and fine detritus.

Field data on the dietary composition of this species specifically are not available in the primary literature. By analogy with other Harttiini — including the better-studied Harttia loricariformis — the diet is expected to consist predominantly of epilithic algal biofilm, fine particulate organic matter, and small invertebrates incidentally ingested while grazing. In captivity, if the species were ever established, it would likely accept algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables, and the natural biofilm that develops on smooth rocks and wood.

Mating

No direct observations of courtship behaviour in Harttia gracilis have been published. What is known derives from the broader biology of the subfamily Loricariinae. In most loricariins, breeding males defend small territories around preferred spawning sites — typically crevices, undercut banks, or accumulations of submerged roots — and court females with lateral displays or short chases. The elongated pectoral-spine odontodes that develop on males in this genus serve both in courtship display and in male–male competition.

The restricted, microhabitat-specific distribution of H. gracilis — hidden among root masses in cold highland streams — suggests that suitable spawning sites are limited in density within the habitat. The species' naturally sparse populations may mean that encounters between conspecifics are infrequent in degraded habitats where root and riparian cover has been reduced. No captive breeding data are available.

Breeding

No breeding observations of Harttia gracilis are documented in the scientific or hobbyist literature. The reproductive strategy of the genus has been characterised only broadly. Members of Harttiini are presume to follow the general loricariid pattern of substrate-adhesive or cavity spawning with some form of parental guarding, though the level of parental investment varies across the subfamily.

In the absence of species-specific data, no clutch sizes, incubation periods, or care durations can be reported without fabrication. The species has not been established in the ornamental fish trade or maintained in public aquaria, meaning there is no hobbyist breeding record either. The IUCN notes that recent targeted collection efforts at the type locality were unsuccessful, indicating that even obtaining wild specimens for study is currently difficult.

In the aquarium

Harttia gracilis is not available in the aquarium trade and is rarely, if ever, encountered in captivity. Its restricted endemic distribution in protected or degraded highland streams in southeastern Brazil means it is not collected commercially, and Brazil's fish export regulations would generally preclude wild collection of a Near Threatened species from this region without permits.

For the highly motivated specialist who might obtain captive-bred specimens in the future, the natural habitat parameters provide a clear target: cool water (61–72 °F), high dissolved oxygen, moderate to strong current, neutral to mildly acidic pH (6.5–7.2), and soft water. A well-filtered, heavily oxygenated stream biotope tank with smooth stones, submerged wood, and riparian root structure would most closely replicate the natural environment. The species' preference for hiding among root masses suggests that dense cover is important for acclimation.

Given its rarity and conservation status, aquarists in Brazil or researchers working with this species should coordinate with institutions such as MZUSP or ICMBio rather than sourcing wild-caught individuals.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Harttia gracilis as Near Threatened (NT) under criterion B1b(iii), assessed on 7 November 2018 and published in 2021 (Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade — ICMBio). The assessment notes a naturally small range (EOO ~8,575 mi²) centred on high-altitude headwater streams in Minas Gerais and São Paulo, a single-record type locality at which recent targeted survey efforts failed to find the species, and a continuing decline in habitat quality throughout the range driven by agricultural runoff, urban expansion, mining, and pollution.

The species is listed as Vulnerable on the São Paulo State Red List. No occurrence within formally protected areas has been confirmed. The principal conservation actions recommended are habitat protection across the drainage basins where the species is known, and further biological research (population surveys, ecology, and more complete range determination). The species has no known commercial use or ornamental trade relevance. Its recovery will depend on the health of Atlantic Forest riparian zones in the upper Paraná highlands — one of the world's most degraded biodiversity hotspots.
