Taxonomy & naming
Hisonotus francirochai was described by von Ihering in 1928 in the Boletim Biologico, Trabalho do Laboratorio de Parasitologia da Facultade de Medicina de São Paulo (volume 11, number 42). The original type material came from creeks near Pirangy in the headwaters of the Rio Turvo, itself a tributary within the Grande (Paraná) drainage of São Paulo State, Brazil.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Hisonotus francirochai. Two earlier synonyms are now subsumed: Microlepidogaster francirochai and Otocinclus francirochai, both reflecting an older, broader generic circumscription for small hypoptopomatine loricariids. FishBase assigns the species ID 50442.
The genus name Hisonotus is formed from the Greek isos (equal) and noton (back), referring to the even, uninterrupted dorsal profile of these small loricariids — in contrast to the humped dorsal outline of some relatives. The species epithet francirochai honours Francisco Franco da Rocha (1864–1933), the pioneering Brazilian psychiatrist who founded the Hospital Psiquiátrico do Juqueri in São Paulo State. The PlanetCatfish ARN reference is 1.4.320.6572.
Within Loricariidae, Hypoptopomatinae is one of the smallest-bodied subfamilies, comprising numerous stream-adapted species that occupy periphyton-rich surfaces in Atlantic Forest and Cerrado drainage systems. Hisonotus sits within this subfamily as a genus of micro-grazers structurally distinct from the otocinclins with which they were historically grouped.
Morphology
Adults reach a maximum of 1.5 in standard length (SL), making H. francirochai among the genuinely tiny members of Loricariidae. Like all hypoptopomatines, the body is encased in overlapping bony scutes that provide armour without the extreme plating of larger loricariid genera. The overall body plan is dorsoventrally compressed and streamlined — adaptations to life on surfaces in flowing water.
The ventral mouth is small and adapted for fine grazing rather than rasping wood or large algae mats. Teeth are slender and numerous, suited to scraping thin biofilm and soft algae from smooth rock and leaf surfaces. The genus is capable of facultative air-breathing, a trait noted for Hisonotus on FishBase, which may allow brief survival in poorly oxygenated or isolated pools.
Colour in life is brownish with darker mottling, providing camouflage against leaf litter and substrate. Detailed photographic documentation exists on FishBase (photograph by Castro, R.M.C.) showing both dorsal and ventral aspects. Sexual dimorphism is not described in the literature available; the species leaves no published breeding records and no aquarium reports in the PlanetCatfish database.
Habitat
The known range of H. francirochai is restricted to the Grande River basin and its Turvo River tributary in the upper Paraná drainage, straddling the São Paulo–Minas Gerais border in southeastern Brazil. The type locality — creeks near Pirangy in the Rio Turvo headwaters — situates the species in Atlantic Forest stream habitat at moderate elevation.
FishBase classifies the species as demersal and subtropical, consistent with the cooler temperatures typical of headwater streams in highland southeastern Brazil. These streams are characteristically fast-flowing, clear, and oxygen-rich, with smooth rock surfaces and submerged leaf litter colonised by periphyton — the biofilm community on which small hypoptopomatines depend. Seasonal variation in flow and temperature is likely; headwater Paraná streams can drop considerably in the dry austral winter.
The trophic level assigned by FishBase is 2.0, the lowest meaningful value on the scale, reflecting a diet at or very close to primary production — consistent with strict algae and biofilm grazing.
Feeding
Hisonotus francirochai is a micro-grazer of algae and periphyton — the thin films of diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria, and associated bacteria and detritus that coat submerged surfaces in clear streams. Its trophic level of 2.0 confirms feeding almost entirely on primary producers, with little or no animal prey.
The small, fine-toothed mouth is well-suited to scraping smooth surfaces rather than excavating soft substrate or rasping wood. In the wild, this translates to foraging across rock faces, leaf surfaces, and hard substrates in the current.
In aquaria, species of Hisonotus would likely accept the standard small-loricariid diet: algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched soft vegetables such as cucumber and courgette. However, no aquarium dietary observations for this species appear in the available record. The small body size means feeding competition from larger tankmates should be carefully managed.
Mating
No courtship or mating observations for Hisonotus francirochai have been published or recorded in the aquarium hobby literature. The broader genus Hisonotus belongs to Hypoptopomatinae, a subfamily where reproductive biology has been described for only a handful of species; those accounts suggest small clutch sizes and substrate-spawning behaviour typical of stream-adapted loricariids.
Given the absence of breeding records for this species on PlanetCatfish and in the primary literature, specific information on courtship behaviour, mate selection, or nuptial characteristics cannot be stated with confidence. Sexual dimorphism has not been characterised for H. francirochai.
Breeding
No breeding accounts for Hisonotus francirochai in captivity are on record. PlanetCatfish lists no breeding reports, wish list entries, or spotters for this species as of the most recent update (December 2010). The species appears essentially absent from the aquarium trade under its current name, and captive reproduction has not been documented.
By analogy with better-known small hypoptopomatines, substrate-spawning with small adhesive clutches is the likely reproductive mode, but this remains unconfirmed for H. francirochai specifically.
In the aquarium
Hisonotus francirochai is virtually absent from the aquarium hobby and carries no common name. PlanetCatfish records six photographic references but no trade presence, no known aquarium collections, and no husbandry reports. It is primarily a species known from museum material and field surveys rather than from aquarium experience.
For any keeper fortunate enough to obtain specimens — likely as by-catch in shipments from southeastern Brazil — the small adult size (under 1.5 in SL) dictates a correspondingly modest tank, but water quality and oxygenation should be high, reflecting the fast, clean headwater streams of the upper Paraná. Smooth rock surfaces and leaf litter with algal growth would replicate the natural microhabitat. Cool to subtropical temperatures (reflecting highland São Paulo streams) and neutral to mildly acidic water are the reasonable starting assumptions, though precise parameters have not been published for this species.
The diminutive scale requires careful tankmate selection: fish small enough not to outcompete or predate on a 1.5 in loricariid are essential. Micro-loricariids of this size are easily overlooked and may hide effectively among leaf litter and rock faces.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hisonotus francirochai as Least Concern, with the assessment completed on 7 November 2018. The listed range — the Grande River basin and Turvo River within the upper Paraná drainage of São Paulo State and Minas Gerais, Brazil — encompasses headwater streams within what was once extensive Atlantic Forest.
Although the LC assessment indicates no immediate extinction risk, the Atlantic Forest biome has undergone dramatic reduction and fragmentation over the past century, and the headwater streams of the upper Paraná drainage are not immune to the agricultural and urban pressures affecting the surrounding landscape. Sedimentation, water extraction, and degradation of riparian buffer zones threaten the clear, fast-flowing microhabitats on which small hypoptopomatines depend. The species' restricted range within a single river sub-basin warrants continued monitoring even under the current LC designation.
