Taxonomy & naming
Isorineloricaria tenuicauda was originally described by Steindachner in 1878. It belongs to the Hypostomus emarginatus group and was formerly placed in the genus Squaliforma before being revised into Isorineloricaria by Ray and Armbruster in their 2016 treatment of the genus (Zootaxa 4072(5): 501–539). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current combination as valid.
The species is placed within the subfamily Hypostominae of the family Loricariidae, following FishBase. No published common names were available in the consulted sources, and the species is not a fixture of the ornamental trade.
Morphology
Isorineloricaria tenuicauda is a large loricariid, reaching about 17.5 in standard length (SL), with a maximum published weight of around 960 g — making it among the heaviest of its genus. The body bears the overlapping bony armour typical of the family.
Detailed published descriptions of colouration and fine meristics beyond the original description and the 2016 revision are limited. No data on sexual dimorphism has been published for this species; like related forms, breeding males would be expected to develop odontode ornamentation, but this is not confirmed in the consulted sources.
Habitat
Isorineloricaria tenuicauda is a freshwater, demersal, tropical species recorded from Colombia. Beyond this, no quantitative habitat data — temperature, pH, hardness, depth, or substrate — has been published in the consulted sources. Its facultative air-breathing ability suggests tolerance of warm, low-oxygen lowland waters that may experience seasonal stagnation.
Feeding
No detailed dietary data has been published for Isorineloricaria tenuicauda. As a member of the Hypostominae it is presumed to graze biofilm, algae, and detritus from submerged surfaces, but this has not been confirmed by published study for the species. Data is sparse.
Mating
No information on courtship or mating behaviour has been published for Isorineloricaria tenuicauda. Data is sparse.
Breeding
No spawning has been documented for this species, and no clutch size, egg description, or parental-care details have been published. As with many loricariids, paternal cave-brooding might be expected, but this is not confirmed. Data is sparse.
In the aquarium
Isorineloricaria tenuicauda is not a species of the ornamental trade and no aquarium husbandry has been documented. Its large adult size — over 17.5 in SL and nearly a kilogram — would make it unsuitable for all but very large systems, and no published care record exists to guide keeping it.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Isorineloricaria tenuicauda as Least Concern, with the assessment dated 10 October 2014. No specific threats were highlighted in the consulted sources. As a Colombian lowland freshwater fish, it would share in regional pressures such as agricultural runoff and habitat alteration, but at present it is not considered threatened.
