Taxonomy & naming
Paralithoxus pallidimaculatus was described by Marinus Boeseman in 1982, from type specimens collected at Kwambaolo Creek, a right-bank tributary of Sara Creek above the Afobaka dam in the Suriname River system, Suriname. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Paralithoxus pallidimaculatus as the valid combination. The species was originally placed in Lithoxus by Boeseman; FishBase retains a redirect from Lithoxus pallidimaculatus to the current valid name.
The genus Paralithoxus was erected to separate a group of stony-substrate loricariids from Lithoxus. The reclassification rests on morphological and/or molecular grounds distinguishing these fishes from the core Lithoxus assemblage, though a comprehensive revision of the Lithoxus group has not been widely published in accessible form. The relationship between Paralithoxus and Lithoxus is signalled by the genus name: Greek para- (beside, adjacent to) + lithos (stone) + oxys (sharp) — 'the sharp stone-dweller beside Lithoxus' — acknowledging the close alliance while recognising the distinction.
Within subfamily Hypostominae, Paralithoxus belongs to the rheophilic lithophilic assemblage — loricariids specialised for life on exposed rock in fast current — a convergent niche occupied by several independent lineages across the family.
Morphology
Paralithoxus pallidimaculatus is a very small loricariid, with adults reaching approximately 2 in standard length (SL). This places it among the smallest members of the family available to science, comparable in scale to some of the miniature Hypoptopomatinae. The body is strongly depressed dorsoventrally — a pronounced flatness that maximises adhesion to exposed rock surfaces in swift current. The suctorial mouth is positioned ventrally, equipped for rasping periphyton from stone.
The species name pallidimaculatus — from Latin pallidus (pale) and maculatus (spotted) — describes the diagnostic colouration: a pale spot pattern overlaid on a darker body ground, providing camouflage against the mottled surface of stream cobbles and boulders. This pale-spotted patterning is the primary visual characteristic noted in the original description.
The body is armoured with bony scutes in the typical loricariid fashion, with the ventral surface smooth and unarmoured. The species is noted as a facultative air-breather — a capacity inferred from genus-level traits, allowing brief tolerance of hypoxic conditions in pool remnants or shallow films of water during the dry season. Sexual dimorphism has not been documented in the literature for this species.
Habitat
Paralithoxus pallidimaculatus inhabits stony rivulets — swift, shallow, rocky streams — in the upper Suriname River basin, Suriname. The type locality, Kwambaolo Creek, is a small tributary entering Sara Creek above the Afobaka dam, placing it within the residual upland catchment that survived inundation when the Brokopondo Reservoir was created in 1964. This reservoir, formed by the Afobaka hydroelectric dam, submerged a large portion of the lower and middle Suriname River valley, including what was formerly part of this species' range.
The surviving habitat is characteristic Guiana Shield upland river: clear, fast-flowing water over exposed granite and sandstone boulders, with very low conductivity, soft water, and a slightly acidic to near-neutral pH. Temperatures in these equatorial highland streams are warm but relatively stable year-round, moderated by the thermal mass of the Guiana Shield bedrock and consistent cloud cover at elevation. Dissolved oxygen is high in the fast, turbulent reaches this species favours.
No formal water chemistry measurements from Kwambaolo Creek or nearby sites have been published in accessible sources for this species specifically.
Feeding
No gut-content or dietary data have been published for Paralithoxus pallidimaculatus. The morphology — a flat, suctorial mouth adapted for pressing tightly against rock surfaces — points strongly toward a periphyton-scraping diet: diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria, and the associated organic biofilm that colonises exposed rock in well-lit, fast-flowing streams. This is the characteristic feeding mode of lithophilic loricariids across multiple subfamilies and convergent lineages.
In the aquarium, standard algae-based loricariid foods would be appropriate as a baseline: algae wafers, spirulina pellets, and blanched vegetables. Smooth, flat rocks with established algal growth would serve both as feeding substrate and behavioural enrichment. Small, sinking protein foods (daphnia, small bloodworm) could be offered occasionally as a supplement, though the species' natural diet is probably primarily autotrophic material.
Mating
Mating behaviour has not been observed or described for Paralithoxus pallidimaculatus in scientific or hobbyist literature. The species is effectively unknown in the ornamental trade, and no aquarium observations have been published.
For a very small rheophilic loricariid of this body form, territorial behaviour around preferred rock crevices or boulder undersides would be expected. In related miniature Hypostominae, males may patrol small territories over suitable spawning substrate, with inter-male competition for prime sites occurring at higher fish densities.
Breeding
No breeding records exist for Paralithoxus pallidimaculatus. The species has not been kept in captivity long-term to any published account, and reproductive behaviour and clutch parameters are entirely undescribed.
By analogy with small, rock-dwelling Hypostominae, spawning on or beneath rock surfaces with some form of parental egg guarding would be the expected pattern, but this is entirely speculative for P. pallidimaculatus. Its very small adult size (under 2 in SL) implies a correspondingly small clutch if it follows the general loricariid relationship between body size and fecundity. The constraints of its upland, fast-water habitat suggest that any captive breeding attempt would require high dissolved oxygen, cool to moderate temperatures, and smooth stone surfaces as spawning substrate.
In the aquarium
Paralithoxus pallidimaculatus is not established in the ornamental trade and does not appear in hobbyist accounts as a maintained species. Its restricted range, small collection record, and Near Threatened conservation status make trade collection inadvisable and logistically unlikely under current conditions.
For the specialist keeper who might hypothetically maintain this species, the Guiana Shield upland origin implies very soft, clean, well-oxygenated water with high turnover — essentially the conditions of a mountain-stream biotope aquarium. Smooth or rough granite-type rocks, strong current, and minimal organic load would be the environmental priorities. At under 2 in SL, the fish is genuinely nano-scale and could theoretically be maintained in a well-maintained small tank of 10–15 US gal if water quality were impeccable and current adequate.
Given the conservation situation — a species already range-contracted by a major dam and flagged as Near Threatened — wild collection for the hobby would be ethically questionable, and any interest in the species should be directed toward supporting field research rather than trade.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Paralithoxus pallidimaculatus as Near Threatened (NT, criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)) on 17 October 2023. The assessment reflects a restricted and already partially destroyed range: the species is known only from the upper Suriname River basin, and the construction of the Afobaka dam and resulting Brokopondo Reservoir in 1964 eliminated a significant portion of its former habitat by inundating the lower and middle Suriname valley. The remaining populations are confined to upper tributaries — including the type-locality catchment of Kwambaolo Creek — that lie above the reservoir and retain suitable fast, rocky stream habitat.
The primary ongoing threat identified in the assessment is further hydropower development. The upper Suriname basin has been identified for potential small hydropower projects, and any additional impoundment in this catchment would further fragment or eliminate habitat for a species with an already small extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO). No current population data are available, making trend assessment impossible but precluding optimism.
The Near Threatened status represents a precautionary recognition that, while the species is not currently classified as threatened, its constrained range, documented historical habitat loss, and continuing infrastructure pressure put it one significant development decision away from qualifying for a threatened category. Conservation of the upper Suriname's remaining free-flowing rocky tributaries is the most direct lever for protecting this and co-occurring rheophilic species.
