Taxonomy & naming
Schizolecis guentheri was originally described by Alípio de Miranda Ribeiro in 1918 in the Revista do Museu Paulista (vol. 10, p. 634), under the combination Microlepidogaster guentheri, from a type specimen collected on Ilha de São Sebastião, Estado de São Paulo, Brazil. The species later passed through the combination Pseudotocinclus ribeiroi before the genus Schizolecis was erected to accommodate it; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current combination Schizolecis guentheri (Miranda Ribeiro, 1918) with the parenthetical authority indicating the genus has changed since the original description.
The genus is monotypic — S. guentheri is its only species — and is placed within subfamily Hypoptopomatinae of Loricariidae, one of the several subfamilies collectively referred to as 'otocinclus-like' small plecos. FishBase and PlanetCatfish both confirm the Hypoptopomatinae placement, consistent with Armbruster (2004) and the Garavello et al. (1998) revision of the Hypoptopomatinae.
A spelling variant, 'guntheri', appears in several popular references and the Scielo-published albinism report (Brito & Caramaschi 2005); however, the Catalog of Fishes upholds 'guentheri' as the correct spelling, honouring the collector Francisco Günther (d. 1912) who collected specimens for the Museu Paulista including the type material. No L-number has been assigned.
Morphology
Schizolecis guentheri is a small-bodied loricariid; males reach a maximum of approximately 1.5 in SL, with females slightly smaller (up to ~1 in SL in records cited by FishBase). The body is typical of the Hypoptopomatinae: elongated, fully armoured with keeled scutes, the ventral profile flat enough to press firmly against rock surfaces. The head is moderately broad and somewhat depressed.
Body coloration is dark on the dorsal and lateral surfaces, with irregular lighter spotting or mottling that provides disruptive camouflage in the fish's habitat of shadowed rock surfaces and plant detritus. The ventral surface is unpigmented (pale to white). The caudal fin bears a dark background with banding or blotching on the median rays, a diagnostic feature of the species. The genus name Schizolecis — from Greek schizein (to divide) + lekis (a little plate) — refers to the divided or segmented appearance of the lateral scute series.
An albino specimen was documented from the rio Macaé basin, Rio de Janeiro State (Brito & Caramaschi 2005, Neotropical Ichthyology 3(1): 123–125), confirming that the species occurs in rivers beyond the type locality and providing useful data on the normal colouration by contrast: normally pigmented specimens have a dark background on the body and caudal fin with small lighter spots. Sexual dimorphism in external characters beyond the size difference has not been formally described.
Habitat
Schizolecis guentheri is restricted to coastal rivers draining the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil. Known records span at least four states: São Paulo (type locality, Ilha de São Sebastião and mainland drainages), Rio de Janeiro (including the rio Macaé basin), Minas Gerais, and Espírito Santo (PlanetCatfish distribution data). These are relatively small, independent coastal drainages — not large basin systems — many of them short, high-gradient rivers descending from the Serra do Mar escarpment to the coast.
Field ecology is documented in detail by a study cited by FishBase (ref. 26630) which recorded the species in streams with rocky and sandy bottoms, mostly in very shallow water (up to 12 in depth), with slow water flow of 0.5–4 in/s. The fish congregated near the substrate surface, associated with bankside vegetation and submersed plant material. Density estimates of 0.09 fish/m² in shaded reaches and 0.15 fish/m² in sunlit reaches suggest the species aggregates where algal productivity is highest.
The narrow endemism to the Atlantic Forest coastal drainages places S. guentheri squarely within one of the world's most threatened biodiversity hotspots, where river systems are highly fragmented and many species have ranges measured in single watersheds.
Feeding
Schizolecis guentheri feeds primarily on microscopic algae growing on hard substrates — mainly diatoms and green algae colonising rock surfaces and submersed vegetation, with occasional chironomid and simuliid (midge and blackfly) larvae taken as animal prey.
Feeding behaviour is documented with unusual precision: before grazing a patch with dense sediment, the fish performs characteristic wiggling, head-down movements to dislodge settled particles from the biofilm before rasping. During active grazing on cleared patches, the fish makes vigorous, rapid mouth movements and advances in jerky bursts — each burst corresponding to a bite and re-attachment cycle as the suckermouth releases and re-attaches to the substrate. This sequence leaves diagnostic parallel, elongated scrape marks on grazed rock surfaces, a signature that can be used to confirm the species' presence at a site even without catching fish.
In an aquarium, this translates to a need for well-established algae growth on rocks and glass, supplemented by algae wafers, spirulina discs, and blanched vegetables. The fish is a gentle grazer and will not compete effectively with more aggressive feeders; ensuring it has uncontested access to food is important in community aquaria.
Mating
Courtship and mating behaviour in S. guentheri have not been described in the scientific literature, and the species has not been reported bred in captivity (PlanetCatfish lists no breeding reports, though three members have listed it on their wish-list). The monotypic genus offers no intra-generic comparisons.
By analogy with other small Hypoptopomatinae — especially the well-studied otocinclus group — S. guentheri likely practises a T-spawning or proximity-spawning mating system in which the male approaches the female from below or beside her, fertilisation occurs in open water, and eggs are scattered on a surface. However, this inference is speculative; some Hypoptopomatinae deposit adhesive eggs on flat surfaces with at least short-term parental guarding, while others scatter eggs freely.
The cryptobiotic tendency of S. guentheri — noted in the context of its relatively high albinism susceptibility among Brazilian fishes (Brito & Caramaschi 2005) — and its small adult size suggest it is a secretive fish that likely spawns close to shelter structures. Dedicated observation in an undisturbed biotope-style aquarium would be needed to document the courtship sequence.
Breeding
No captive breeding of Schizolecis guentheri has been documented in the ornamental fish literature or catfish specialist communities as of mid-2026. The species is essentially absent from the ornamental trade; PlanetCatfish records no registered keepers and no breeding reports, only six field sighting records.
Given its similarity in ecology and size to the otocinclus group, conditions that have proven successful for breeding Otocinclus would be a reasonable starting point: soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.5–7.0), moderate temperature (72–79 °F), a heavily planted or algae-rich environment, and a varied diet rich in vegetable matter and biofilm. Triggering spawning attempts through conditioning followed by partial water changes with slightly cooler water — mimicking seasonal rainfall events in the Atlantic Forest — is a common technique in the genus Otocinclus.
The species' restricted distribution in increasingly threatened Atlantic Forest coastal rivers makes any successful captive breeding effort of potential conservation value, though establishing a captive population would first require access to wild-sourced stock — a non-trivial challenge given the near-zero commercial availability of this species.
In the aquarium
Schizolecis guentheri is effectively unknown in the ornamental hobby. It has no assigned L-number and no commercial presence; specimens would only be obtainable through scientific collections, targeted field expeditions, or specialist exchanges among researchers and catfish enthusiasts who collect in the Atlantic Forest drainages of southeastern Brazil.
In biotope or research aquaria, the species is reported to do well in shallow conditions (consistent with its preference for water up to 12 in deep in the wild) with a current, smooth stones for grazing, and bankside vegetation. The very small adult size (under 1.5 in) makes it suitable even for smaller tanks — 10–15 US gal would be appropriate for a group — provided algae are established and food supply is consistent.
Water parameters should reflect the clean, moderately fast coastal streams of the Atlantic Forest: temperature 68–79 °F, pH 6.5–7.2, low to moderate hardness, and high dissolved oxygen. Being a subtropical species at roughly 22–25°S latitude, it can tolerate somewhat cooler winter conditions that would stress Amazonian species. Strong, direct bright light encourages algal growth and supports healthy feeding.
The fish is almost certainly peaceful toward all tankmates. Given that it grazes predominantly during the day, co-habitation with other diurnal algae grazers or soft-substrate feeders should be carefully managed to ensure S. guentheri is not outcompeted at feeding time. Otocinclus-style tankmates, small characins, and dwarf livebearers would all be compatible choices. No aggression toward conspecifics has been documented.
Conservation
Schizolecis guentheri has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List (status: Not Evaluated). This reflects the species' low profile in conservation assessments rather than evidence of security — it is confined entirely to the coastal drainages of the Atlantic Forest, one of the world's most fragmented and threatened biodiversity hotspots, where less than 12% of original forest cover now remains.
The rivers S. guentheri inhabits — small, independent coastal systems in southeastern Brazil — face sustained pressure from urbanisation, agricultural runoff, water abstraction for irrigation and municipal supply, and channel modification for flood control. The rio Macaé system where the albino specimen was found (Brito & Caramaschi 2005) flows through an area of significant human activity including petroleum infrastructure. Many Atlantic Forest river systems lack the protected area networks that exist, at least partially, for larger Amazonian and Paraná basin drainages.
The monotypic status of the genus amplifies the conservation concern: extinction of S. guentheri would eliminate the entire genus Schizolecis. Formal population assessments and range-wide IUCN evaluation are warranted, particularly given the cumulative habitat loss across the known state-range of the species.
