Dichotomyctere nigroviridis, the green spotted puffer, is one of the most recognisable pufferfish in the aquarium trade — a compact, alert fish whose olive-green back is studded with bold dark spots and whose cream-to-white underside gleams in contrast. Native to the coastal brackish and tidal waters of South and Southeast Asia, it moves between estuaries, mangroves and the lower reaches of rivers from India and Sri Lanka east to Borneo and Java. It is a born predator, equipped with a beak of fused teeth that it turns on snails, shellfish and crustaceans with purposeful efficiency. That same beak grows continuously and must be worn down through a diet of hard-shelled prey, a non-negotiable requirement of keeping this fish well. Spirited, curious and often aggressive, the green spotted puffer is not a community fish but a personality fish — one that rewards a dedicated brackish setup with constant activity and outsized character.

Taxonomy & naming

Dichotomyctere nigroviridis was first described by the French naturalist Marion de Procé in 1822 in the Bulletin des Sciences par la Société Philomatique de Paris (vol. 9, pp. 129–134), with material from the Deli River area near present-day Medan, Sumatra, on the coast of northern Indonesia. The original combination placed the species in the worldwide catch-all genus Tetraodon, and for the better part of two centuries it was widely known in both the scientific literature and the aquarium trade as Tetraodon nigroviridis.

A molecular phylogenetic revision of the Asian freshwater and brackish pufferfish published around 2013 demonstrated that the old genus Tetraodon was polyphyletic — the African puffers and the Asian ones do not form a natural unit. The revision transferred the brackish Asian species — including the green spotted puffer and its close relative the figure-eight puffer (D. ocellatus) — to the resurrected genus Dichotomyctere. The African species (T. lineatus, T. mbu and their relatives) remained in Tetraodon, which is now an African-only genus. Other Asian puffers were assigned to Pao (the large Mekong river puffers) and Leiodon (the ocellated puffer). The Catalog of Fishes records the valid current name as Dichotomyctere nigroviridis (Marion de Procé, 1822), with the parenthetical authority indicating the transfer out of the original genus. The name nigroviridis is Latin for 'black-green', referencing the species' characteristic dark-spotted, greenish dorsal colouration.

The species is still frequently listed as Tetraodon nigroviridis in older literature and in trade. Aquarists should be aware that Tetraodon is now a restricted, Africa-only name, and that this puffer belongs to an entirely different genus and continent.

Morphology

The green spotted puffer is a compact, globose fish typical of the family Tetraodontidae in outline — a large, rounded head narrowing abruptly into a short, deep body and a small, paddle-like caudal fin. FishBase records a maximum total length of 6.5 in, though most wild and aquarium specimens reach 4.5–6 in. The mouth is small and terminal, dominated by the four fused, beak-like teeth — two above and two below — that give the family its name. These teeth never stop growing and may be cream to orange-tinted in healthy individuals; overgrowth is a real welfare concern in captive fish denied hard prey.

The dorsal surface and flanks are yellow-green to olive, covered with irregular dark brown to black spots of varying size that give the species both its common name and the specific epithet nigroviridis. The underside is pale, ranging from cream to white. The skin is scaleless and smooth, with a finely bumpy or slightly spinose texture. Like all tetraodontids the green spotted puffer lacks true gill covers (opercula) and propels itself with synchronised undulations of the dorsal and pectoral fins, giving it a distinctive hovering flight. When threatened it can inflate its highly elastic stomach by gulping water to become nearly spherical, deterring most predators. Sexing live fish is difficult; females may appear slightly rounder in the body when in breeding condition, but no reliable external characters are documented.

Habitat

Dichotomyctere nigroviridis is a brackish specialist of the coastal transition zone in South and Southeast Asia. Its native range extends from the east coast of India and Sri Lanka through Myanmar, Thailand and the Malay Peninsula to Sumatra, Borneo and Java, encompassing a large arc of tropical coastline. Within that range it inhabits estuaries, tidal river mouths, mangrove creeks and the lower brackish reaches of rivers, where salinity fluctuates with tidal cycles and seasonal freshwater input.

Water chemistry in these habitats is hard and alkaline relative to most tropical freshwater environments, reflecting the buffering influence of sea water. FishBase gives a temperature range of 75–82 °F and a pH around 8.0, with hardness of 9–19 dH; Seriously Fish reports pH 7.5–8.5 and hardness 10–20°H for the species in aquarium-relevant terms. Turbidity and substrate vary widely — the fish is found over mud, sand and the complex root systems of mangroves alike. It is a robust, mobile predator of the benthos and water column, not a species tied to a single habitat microtype, which likely contributes to its wide range and Least Concern status. Juveniles are more frequently encountered in lower-salinity areas; adults tend toward higher salinities closer to the sea, a pattern reflected in the aquarium advice that mature green spotted puffers do best in near-marine conditions.

Feeding

The green spotted puffer is a dedicated carnivore and molluscivore. In the wild its diet centres on molluscs, small crustaceans and benthic invertebrates — prey it locates by sight and dismembers with its powerful beak. FishBase records mollusks, crustaceans and invertebrates as the primary dietary categories. The four fused teeth allow the fish to crack open snail shells and the exoskeletons of small crabs and prawns that would be impenetrable to most fish of similar size.

In the aquarium this diet is not merely a preference but a physical necessity. The beak grows continuously throughout the fish's life and is worn down only by abrasion against hard food. A puffer fed only soft items — frozen bloodworm, pieces of fish fillet — will develop overgrown teeth within months, eventually rendering the fish unable to eat. A proper diet must include unshelled snails (ramshorn and pond snails are ideal), small clams or mussels in the shell, unpeeled prawns or crayfish, and occasional crab. These items provide nutrition and mechanical wear in a single package. Live or fresh-frozen shellfish should make up the bulk of the diet, supplemented with other meaty invertebrate foods.

Mating

The green spotted puffer is a substrate spawner. In both wild observations and the limited captive accounts available, a conditioning male courts a gravid female, eventually driving her toward a flat hard surface — a smooth rock, a large broad leaf, or the tank floor — where spawning takes place. The female deposits a clutch of small, adhesive eggs directly onto the substrate; the male fertilises them immediately.

Sexing living fish is difficult and no fully reliable external criterion has been published; differences in body depth and abdominal fullness are noted by experienced keepers but are inconsistent. Breeding conditioning in captivity is typically attempted with a varied diet of live and fresh shellfish and a gradual increase in salinity toward near-marine levels, though success remains uncommon. The male's role in spawning distinguishes tetraodontid brackish puffers from many other small fish in the hobby — in this family it is the male that takes on the post-spawning duties.

Breeding

After spawning on a flat surface, the male guards the clutch actively, fanning the eggs and defending the site against intruders including the female. Eggs are reported to hatch in approximately seven days under appropriate conditions; the male continues to guard the larvae and may move them to a shallow depression. The larvae are very small at hatching and require appropriately fine first foods — infusoria or rotifers in the first days, transitioning to freshly hatched brine shrimp as the fry grow.

Successful captive breeding of Dichotomyctere nigroviridis is genuinely rare and poorly documented; most published accounts are fragmentary, and the species is not bred commercially in significant numbers. The difficulty arises partly from the species' aggression — pair conditioning requires careful management to prevent injury — and partly from the specialised water chemistry and diet required to bring fish into breeding condition. Aquarists who have achieved spawnings generally report that maintaining true brackish water (specific gravity around 1.005–1.010) and a diet dominated by live and hard-shelled prey were essential preconditions.

In the aquarium

The green spotted puffer is one of the most engaging fish available in the hobby, but it demands a specialised, species-dedicated setup. It is an aggressive fin-nipper and predator that will bite the fins and body of tankmates, and even conspecifics are not reliably safe in the same tank — most keepers maintain it alone or in a carefully managed group of similar-sized individuals with ample space and visual breaks. It is emphatically not a community fish and will injure or kill fish as large as itself.

Brackish water is mandatory. Juvenile green spotted puffers tolerate lower salinities — a specific gravity of around 1.005 is commonly used for young fish — but adults transition toward near-marine conditions and do best at SG 1.010–1.018 or higher. Aquarists should plan for this salinity progression from the outset and use marine salt mix rather than cooking salt. Water chemistry should be warm (75–82 °F), hard and alkaline (pH 7.5–8.5). The species is scaleless and lacks true gill covers, making it sensitive to medications; copper-based treatments are toxic and must never be used. Dose other medications at reduced levels and with close observation. The fish produces significant biological waste and requires robust, oversized filtration plus frequent, large water changes to maintain water quality.

Hard-shelled prey is not optional — a puffer denied snails and shellfish will develop overgrown teeth within months and may starve despite a full stomach. Ramshorn snails, pond snails, small mussels, unpeeled prawns and occasional crayfish must form the core of the diet. The fish should never be lifted out of the water into air; if alarmed it will inflate with air rather than water and may struggle to deflate, causing injury. Its skin and organs contain tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin; it poses no risk in a normal aquarium context but the fish should not be eaten and basic hygiene precautions apply when handling tank water.

Given appropriate conditions — a species tank, correct salinity, a diet of hard prey — the green spotted puffer is a long-lived, responsive and interactive fish with a strong individual personality. It is one of the few aquarium species that genuinely recognises its keeper and responds to them at the glass.

Conservation

Dichotomyctere nigroviridis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in August 2020. The assessment reflects the species' wide coastal range across South and Southeast Asia, its presence across multiple countries and river systems, its use of diverse brackish habitats, and the absence of evidence of a significant range-wide population decline. FishBase rates it as having high resilience (population doubling time under 15 months), consistent with the Least Concern listing.

The primary pressures on the species are those affecting coastal and estuarine ecosystems broadly across its range: mangrove clearance and coastal reclamation, industrial and agricultural pollution of tidal rivers and estuaries, sedimentation from deforestation, and the collection of juveniles for the aquarium trade. The latter is significant — green spotted puffers collected from the wild for the hobby are routinely sold in freshwater (which they tolerate short-term but do not thrive in), and many die within months in unsuitable freshwater community tanks. The trade in wild fish is real but has not been identified as a primary driver of population decline. As with most estuarine species across Southeast Asia, long-term population trends depend heavily on the fate of coastal wetland habitats in the countries of its range.
