Pufferfish · names

Every name, resolved

A pufferfish is known by a current scientific binomial under the Catalog of Fishes and, often, by an English common name — “pea puffer”, “green spotted puffer”, “Fahaka”, “Amazon puffer”. Because the old worldwide genus Tetraodon was split — most of its species moving into Dichotomyctere, Pao and Leiodon — the same fish frequently still travels under an outdated name. This index cross-references both layers — the 31 scientific names and 69 common names — and resolves each one to its species page.

Scientific name — the valid binomial under the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names. Common name — English vernacular and trade names recorded for the species, including outdated ones (a green spotted puffer is still widely sold as “Tetraodon nigroviridis”). Each entry is tagged with its group. Some little-kept puffers have no settled English name and appear by their binomial only.
